The next morning, the very first thing Amber did upon entering the classroom was change seats.
She hauled her desk over to sit next to Tillie Taylor. Then, she politely asked the classmate who usually sat next to Tillie to swap with Joanne's seatmate, successfully moving Joanne's desk right next to Lucian's.
The entire class watched in stunned silence, afraid to speak up—though naturally, a few brave souls couldn't resist. "Amber, you better hold out for at least three days this time. Don't go making up with him tomorrow like you always do, haha."
A few others quickly joined in on the mockery.
"Hey Vance, I don't think it'll be that easy for them to make up this time. Joanne's the prettiest girl at Riverport High! Lucian is probably thrilled deep down."
Tillie was about to tell them to shut up, but Amber stopped her. "How about a bet? If Lucian and I still aren't back together by graduation, you all owe me twenty bucks each."
Tillie was shocked.
"Amber, are you crazy?!"
Amber wasn't crazy. They were going to make private bets behind her back anyway.
She was strapped for cash, and her classmates clearly had too much free time. Amber quickly did the math—if she won, it would be a decent little payout.
Vance Leavitt and the others stared at her. "Amber, are you serious?"
Amber crossed her arms. "What, too scared to put your money where your mouth is?"
Vance immediately stood up. "Who's scared? But what if you lose?"
Amber smirked. "I'll pay everyone out double. Plus, I'll cover a graduation dinner. Haven't you all been dying to check out that new club downtown? How about it? We can celebrate graduation in style."
Vance had never particularly liked Amber, but this new, bold version of her was surprisingly right up his alley. If they were to redo the school beauty vote right now, he'd force the whole class to vote for Amber.
Now this was the kind of class representative they needed.
"Alright, it's a bet."
"Listen up, everyone! Place your bets now. Blue tickets if you're backing Amber, red tickets if you're backing me. We cash out on results day. Amber, you cool with me holding the pot?"
Vance was the athletic representative. He was all brawn, and even though his dad had pulled strings to get him into an academically rigorous class hoping it would rub off on him, Vance remained hopelessly unacademic.
