Lucian Juarez returned to their two-bedroom apartment, only to find Loretta Leavitt beating his mother's face bloody.

Loretta had taken a few hits herself, but it was nothing compared to the state his mother was in.

Grace's clothes were torn, leaving her partially exposed. Her hair was a tangled mess, and her mouth and nose were smeared with blood.

Seeing that Lucian had finally arrived, she wailed even louder than she had while being hit. "Lucian, call the cops! Hurry, get her arrested!"

"Loretta, I'll kill you!"

Loretta simply raised her hand and slapped her across the face. "Bring it on, then. Who's scared of you?"

Grace was stunned by the blow. Lucian quickly stepped forward. "Stop it, Loretta. Do we really need to get the police involved?"

"Call them! See if I care. The worst they'll do is lock me up for a few days. Lucian, you're just a kid, so I won't stoop to your level, but your mother hired thugs to beat up my cousin. I'm not letting that slide."

Lucian blocked her path. "Xanthe was hit by her older brother. Loretta, playing dumb here is pointless."

Loretta doubled down. "I don't care who he is. Your mother brought him here, so it's her fault. The last time you called me, I knew something felt off. Turns out, you two were setting a trap for me all along."

"You've really got some nerve. If your mother wants to string Amber's dad along, that's her business. I don't care, and it doesn't affect me. But what gives her the right to slander my cousin, accuse her of stealing her man, and claim she's ruining her family?"

"It's laughable. Grace, is Arthur Newman even your man? He's just free labor. In public, you tell everyone he's just a friend looking out for you, and behind closed doors, it's even worse."

"My cousin just moved here. She works her fingers to the bone selling lunches, and you started spreading vile rumors about her stealing a man who isn't even yours to begin with. Lucian, I might not have much education, but I know slander and defamation can land a person in jail."

"A beating is getting off easy."

Loretta shoved Lucian aside, grabbed Grace by the hair, and viciously kicked her.

Grace wasn't about to give up. "Loretta, stop spouting nonsense! Everyone in this neighborhood knows how many years Arthur and I have been together. Your cousin Xanthe is a homewrecker who ruins families. I didn't slander her!"

"You know better than anyone what kind of hellhole the Sutton family is. If Amber hadn't bailed her out, do you think she'd be out here selling lunches? You humiliated me during that Joanne incident, and now you're trying to do it again. Do you think I'm that easy to bully?"
