Grace had rushed to the ATM with her bank book and debit card to check the balance.
She thought a quick glance would ease her anxiety, but she never expected what she would find. Even though she could barely read, she knew her numbers perfectly well.
She counted the zeros over and over again. Since it was a fixed-term deposit, she knew exactly how much was supposed to be in there.
Exactly thirty thousand dollars was missing.
Thirty thousand dollars!!!
Which son of a bitch touched her money?!
She immediately called the bank, but since it was after hours, she was forced to call the police. The dispatcher told her to stay exactly where she was while they sent officers to verify the situation. Terrified that the bank might deny liability, Grace stood frozen in front of the ATM.
She wanted the security cameras to capture her every move so they knew she wasn't lying—her money had actually been stolen.
By the time Arthur arrived on his motorcycle, police officers and a bank manager called to the scene were already thoroughly investigating Grace's claim.
"Grace, did they figure it out? Can you get it back?"
Being a widow raising Lucian while running a street cart was brutally hard. She pinched pennies and calculated every single expense. Thirty thousand dollars might be pocket change to a wealthy family, but to them, it represented years of grueling labor.
Arthur knew Grace had set up a fixed-deposit account using Lucian's ID. It held their entire net worth. If it had truly been hacked, it was a catastrophe.
Grace's face was chalk white. As Arthur stepped forward to comfort her, an officer casually asked, "And who are you to her?"
Arthur wanted to say, 'I'm her man!'
But Grace beat him to it. "He's my brother. He's been taking care of me and my son for years. Officer, please, you have to find out what happened! Thirty thousand dollars! Do you have any idea how many dishes I have to wash and breakfasts I have to sell to make that much?!"
The cold sting of her rejection was immediately drowned out by her wailing. "Officers, I'm begging you! My sister has had a horribly hard life. We're blue-collar workers, skipping meals and wearing rags just to save enough for her kid's college tuition. Please..."
"We're handling it according to protocol, please calm down," the officer replied.
