Amber didn't want to do anything at all.
All she wanted was to successfully pass the Exam, secure Sharif's sponsorship program, rewrite her miserable past, and make Lucian regret everything.
"What endgame? Mr. Madison, why do you always make everything sound so intense?"
Sharif was left speechless. So the little fox was going to play dumb to the grave!
"Amber..."
"Mr. Madison, no matter what my plans are, there's one thing you never have to doubt, and that is..." Amber looked up at him, "I will never be your enemy."
"I know you letting me cook here is a sign of your trust. Whatever you're still suspicious of, that's your right, but earning that trust is my capability."
"As for the Sargent Group's bidding price, it wasn't hard to guess. I'm sure you figured it out too. I simply used the same method you did."
"It's true that once the two conditions expire and Yvonne is no longer suppressed, she will come after me with double the force. But by then..." Amber smiled, "I'll already be sponsored by you, studying abroad, and launching my tech projects. Even if Yvonne comes after me, I'll have your protection and my own technical expertise. Even if she thinks she rules the world, what could she possibly do to me?"
"Thank you for your concern, Mr. Madison, but I won't back myself into a corner. Missing the math section of the fifth mock exam was indeed my oversight, but it was a one-time mistake. It will never happen again. Honestly, I should be thanking you for your trust."
Sharif's dark, abyss-like eyes stared deeply at her.
He knew Amber was dodging the question. She was intentionally reminding him that their relationship was purely a partnership. Because he had given her his trust, her job was to never betray him and to make him money. As for anything else, her words implied an unspoken truth—everyone has secrets.
She had plenty of secrets, but didn't he have his own?
She hadn't called him out for hiring a private investigator to tail and background-check her, nor did she explain her missed exam, instead asking him to look into someone for her. This was her way of telling him that they were simply helping each other out within the bounds of their sponsorship agreement.
A true fox.
Even when he cornered her with his questions, she still managed to flip the board on him.
Impressive.
"You're too modest. Solving problems independently is the primary condition of the Group's sponsorship. The trust I've placed in you is naturally well-deserved."
Yet, Sharif still felt a distinct sense of irritation. He was indeed testing and monitoring her according to standard protocol, but hearing it laid out so clinically from her mouth made it sound like that was the absolute extent of their relationship.
Sharif hated that feeling. It made his chest tight. "Amber..."
"Do you remember telling me to go ahead and do what I need to do, and that you'd have my back if anything went wrong?" Amber met his probing dark gaze once again. "I will always remember that. If there ever comes a day when I'm truly out of options, I will call you."
