As soon as they left the restaurant, Joanne's brain went into overdrive, pinning all the blame directly on Amber and Vance.

Joanne let out a tearful sob. Lucian, suppressing his fury to the absolute limit, loosened his grip.

Her crying broke his heart even more. "Lucian, what do I have to do to make you believe me?"

Lucian cut straight to the point. "You are not to see him again."

"Joanne, I know you felt terrible for me when I lost the Physics Olympiad, but that's in the past. The Exam is right around the corner. Once it's over, I'm going to start my own business. She wasn't some naive girl easily swayed by sweet talk.

However, since he had convinced himself she was only doing this because she felt bad about his competition loss, she saw no need to correct him.

"Lucian, I'm glad you know. It's not that I don't believe you, but I just..." Joanne wiped her tears. "How did Amber beat you? Putting the competition aside, she missed an entire subject on the last mock exam and still got perfect scores on the rest, and then made that bet with you."

"Lucian, I was just so furious. And it just so happened that Mr. Yates... Oh, right, Lucian, this Mr. Yates is Ms. Sargent's fiancé. Ms. Sargent went after Amber, and he was just asking me questions about her."
