Lucian skipped class today.
By the time he opened his eyes, third period was already over.
Without Amber serving as his free alarm clock, and without having set one himself—plus his mom being in the hospital—he probably would have slept until the afternoon if the sun hadn't been glaring directly onto his bed.
Lucian was a notoriously heavy sleeper with a terrible morning temper, a bad habit he'd picked up during his time abroad. In their past life, Amber had been incredibly accommodating. Rather than waking him up directly, she would set a series of alarms five minutes apart, letting them ring four or five times until his morning rage finally subsided.
Before finals in their past life, Lucian hadn't just been top of the class academically; his attendance had been flawless too. Today, he fell from grace, but he didn't care in the slightest.
He ran a hand through his hair, hopped out of bed quickly, and reached for the nightstand to grab a fresh set of clothes—only to find absolutely nothing there.
Lucian stared blankly for three full seconds before muttering, "Damn it!"
He had forgotten. During their school days, Amber didn't just wake him up every morning; she laid out his clean clothes—inside and out—and had breakfast waiting on the table.
His mother had given Amber the spare key when she was just a middle school freshman, adopting the tone of someone training a future daughter-in-law. "Amber, from now on, Lucian's breakfast, homework, and dinner are entirely in your hands. I know you'll work hard for the sake of your beautiful future together."
But Amber had been reborn, just like him. Naturally, she wasn't going to cater to his every whim anymore.
Lucian scoffed. He didn't care. Even if he had to wear yesterday's dirty clothes, leave the house without brushing his teeth, and walk out with unwashed face, it didn't matter to him.
Even though he used to be the wealthiest man in the city and despised looking sloppy, he had crashed into bed the night before, completely exhausted. The towel he had left soaking in the basin for over forty hours was still there, and he had no patience to deal with it.
He turned on the faucet, splashed some water on his face, dried off with a paper towel, grabbed his backpack, and hurried to school. As he rushed past the diner, Arthur thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. Why was Lucian only heading to school now?
Arthur pulled out his phone to call him, but hearing the automated voice prompt reminded him that Lucian still hadn't unblocked his number.
He thought about calling Amber to ask why she hadn't called him about Lucian running this late, but it was the middle of class. Plus, Amber had explicitly told him yesterday that she had something extremely important to handle around noon and asked him not to bring her lunch or call her.
Arthur fell into deep thought. It seemed Lucian and Amber's falling out was truly serious.
They had bickered before, but never anything like this.
By the time Lucian arrived at school, fourth period had been over for five minutes.
Because the halls were crowded, the security guard didn't pay him much attention. Lucian hadn't come to school to explain his absence to a teacher anyway; he was here to find Joanne, and to rub his presence in Amber's face.
But he didn't see Joanne anywhere, nor did he get the chance to give Amber a dirty look.
He did spot Tillie heading toward the cafeteria. "Tillie, have you seen Joanne?"
