Thinking back on it now, Amber found it entirely laughable.
Grace wasn't worried about Amber being judged; she was terrified Amber would become too appealing and leave her son.
Telling her to take the pill? That was just a ploy to force her into long-term contraceptive use, hoping to render her permanently infertile so that the moment Lucian achieved success, he could kick her to the curb without any lingering ties.
As for forcing her into dark, baggy clothes? That was to keep her invisible, preventing her from ever realizing that there were men out there who would treat her far better than Lucian.
Grace had spent every single day brainwashing her, instilling a slavish devotion where Lucian was the center of her universe. By doing that, Grace successfully molded a compliant maid who would serve her and her son without a single complaint, genuinely believing it was the greatest honor of her life.
It was terrifying to think about.
Thankfully, Amber wasn't stupid. The only reason she had never rebelled was because she truly, earnestly wanted to build a life with Lucian.
But in the end, all her sincere devotion had been fed to the dogs.
"Alright, thanks for the compliment. Let's head back to class. I need to drop by the physics teacher's office before the bell rings." Amber picked up her soaked hoodie.
If Lucian was competing, then Amber was definitely competing.
Tillie knew she had things to handle and didn't waste time. As they walked out of the dorm building, Vance—who had disappeared earlier—came jogging up with a brand-new school uniform in his arms.
He had just started saying, "Amber, I bought you a new..." when he froze dead in his tracks.
Vance was well aware of how pretty Amber was. Whenever she wasn't buried in baggy clothes or dreary colors, she easily rivaled Joanne. But seeing her like this now, Vance felt his heart hammer wildly against his ribs, just like it had last night.
In the warm sunlight, Amber's white dress was blindingly beautiful. The cool breeze lifted her long, straight black hair, making her look like the leading lady in a romantic movie, catching the eye of the male lead.
*Drip.*
Being the clueless teenage boy he was, Vance actually got a nosebleed.
As Amber heard him call out, she turned around. The sunlight seemed to favor her, highlighting her long, flawless legs left uncovered by the dress. The sight only made Vance's nosebleed worse.
It took Tillie yelling, "Vance, why is your nose bleeding? Do you need to go to the clinic?" to snap him out of it.
Vance's face turned the color of a boiled lobster. "N-no, I'm fine... since the dress fits, you don't need the uniform. I'll go return it."
With that, he hugged the new uniform to his chest and bolted.
He had decided to eat nothing but plain bread for a week just to scrounge up the cash to buy it for her. But... it was a good thing she didn't need it. She looked incredible in a dress. She should wear dresses more often.
Amber didn't pay much attention to the incident. Linking arms with Tillie, they headed to the physics teacher's office. Just as they walked in, Lucian was walking out.
His face twisted in shock, immediately followed by disgust.
He was stunned to see her wearing a dress like that.
No one knew Amber's body better than Lucian. She was dangerously curvy and stunning—especially in bed, where she drove him absolutely insane.
