Lucian ordered takeout.
Before evening study hall even ended, his stomach was cramping from hunger.
In his past life, he had never experienced this kind of misery. Discomfort aside, he just desperately wanted real food.
He hadn't eaten anything all day except for that single bowl of instant noodles, and the resulting illness had left him dehydrated.
After dropping Joanne off and returning to the two-bedroom apartment, he found the fridge completely empty and the stove cold. Even if there was dry pasta, he didn't know how to boil it, let alone where the cooking oil was kept.
He wanted to explode in rage, but he forced it down. This was his choice. Since he demanded Amber get out of his life, he had to endure the consequences.
Besides, he wasn't an idiot. It was just cooking and delivering food—with money, how hard could it be?
He pulled out his phone, added a massive amount of food to his cart, and hit checkout. The screen flashed: Payment Failed. Insufficient Funds.
Lucian stared at those words for a full ten seconds before checking his digital wallet. A pathetic balance of three dollars stared back at him.
Lucian cursed loudly, letting out a roar of absolute frustration.
He had completely forgotten that over the past few days, he had bought Joanne countless gifts. His balance had never dropped below a thousand before. He had never checked the prices because, in his previous life, he was used to swiping a black card. He had casually spent money like he was already a billionaire.
He had never possessed any concept of money. Let alone his mother, Arthur and Amber had always made sure he never lacked anything. During their school days, his bank account was constantly topped up by the three of them. Because his food, clothes, and daily necessities were completely covered, the money in his account just sat there.
Sometimes, Amber would even give him the money she earned from her odd jobs, terrified he might go hungry. Right, in college, she had handed over two-thirds of her part-time wages to him.
Back then, he told her she didn't need to, claiming the Madison Corporation gave him an allowance. But Amber insisted. When it was cold, she knitted him scarves and gloves; when it was hot, she bought him sets of clothes so he'd have fresh ones to change into.
She gave him her absolute best.
She barely owned any clothes herself. Naturally, it never crossed his mind to buy her anything. Amber was easily satisfied. One Christmas, having forgotten to buy a present, he casually gave her a cheap corporate mug he'd received from a client meeting. She had treasured it like a priceless artifact, using it for years.
She even kept it on her desk during the three years she worked as Sharif's secretary.
And now... Lucian looked at the dirty, unkempt living room, the dirty cup on the table, and the pile of foul-smelling laundry overflowing in the bathroom. He pinched the bridge of his nose and called his mother.
"Mom, send me some money. I need to buy Olympiad prep books."
Grace was still awake. Even though she was lazy, lying in a hospital bed all day meant she wasn't sleepy.
She had been waiting for Arthur to call her back. She didn't expect her son to call first, let alone immediately ask for money.
