"Grace, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hang up on you. The signal in the apartment is terrible. Did you... hear anything?" Arthur asked anxiously, terrified she had misunderstood.
He wondered if Loretta had mentioned that he was housing her cousin.
Arthur figured Loretta probably hadn't. He kicked himself for not giving Grace a heads-up; now he felt like a cheating husband trying to cover his tracks.
"No, I didn't hear anything. I'm sorry for calling so late, Arthur. Did you go find Joanne's dad?" Grace gripped her bedsheets tight. Arthur Newman, if you dare bring another woman into that house behind my back, I will make you pay.
Hearing that she hadn't heard anything, Arthur let out a massive sigh of relief. "Grace..."
"Arthur, I thought about it, and it was selfish of me. Timothy is a thug. If you went to him like that, he definitely would have made things difficult for you. Good thing you didn't go. Don't worry about it anymore. I'll get the money from Joanne myself when I'm discharged."
Arthur was stunned. "Grace, did you hear something? Grace, listen to me..."
"Arthur, what could I have possibly heard? We aren't married. Even if you really were hiding a woman in your house, what could I do about it? I just called to ask if you talked to her dad. If not, forget it. Oh, right, Lucian's Olympiad is the day after tomorrow. Go to the market tomorrow and buy a fresh chicken, and make sure you cook lunch and dinner for him."
"That boy... I don't even know if he's eating properly while I'm in here. He just called me asking for money. Arthur, Lucian might not be your biological son, but you watched him grow up. You can't just think about yourself. Lucian is going to a top university abroad. Take good care of him for me, and I'll pay you for your labor once I'm out."
With that, Grace hung up.
She did it on purpose. She was playing hard to get, twisting the knife so Arthur would feel immensely guilty.
Spit! He hadn't gone to Joanne's house because he was busy bringing that woman home! And that little hussy Amber was in on it, happily calling her "Xanthe" this and "Xanthe" that.
Had she ever mistreated Amber?
She asked them to take care of her son, and instead of being grateful, they backstabbed her! Like father, like daughter—both ungrateful traitors!
Just wait. She was checking herself out of the hospital tomorrow. She couldn't wait to see how they would explain this to her face.
Arthur listened to the dial tone, a heavy knot forming in his chest. Regardless of what she heard, her words stung. She spoke to him as if he were just a hired hand.
If Lucian wasn't eating well, how was that his fault? Lucian had blocked his number and flat-out rejected his care. Arthur had run Grace's diner all day, and still managed to deliver hot meals to her at the hospital.
He had skipped out on his construction job, paid out of his own pocket to keep the diner stocked, and she hadn't offered a single word of thanks. Instead, she said she would "pay him for his labor"?
Had she ever paid him in the twelve years he'd practically served her?
