Grace was in such a phenomenal mood today that when she opened the diner, she completely ignored the fact that Arthur wasn't there.
Last night, she had considered calling to berate him, but knowing Lucian was competing today to bring home fifty thousand dollars, she didn't want to curse her own luck.
She even handed out free side dishes of pickles to every customer who walked in. The regulars were pleasantly surprised. "Grace, did you strike it rich?"
It wasn't easy for a single mother to run a business, but the patrons weren't praising her work ethic—they were far more interested in her finances and her iron grip on Arthur.
Before Grace could tell the customer to shut it, another regular chimed in. "I bet Arthur finally got his act together! He bought an electric food truck to sell boxed lunches. He's stepping up to give Grace a better life, and she's just sharing the joy with us!"
Grace had been about to brag about Lucian's Olympiad money, but she froze. "What electric food truck? What boxed lunches? Lyle, you better explain yourself right now."
Lyle, the man who had spoken, chuckled. "Playing dumb, Grace? Oh man, did I ruin the surprise? Was Arthur keeping it a secret from you?"
Lyle was known for having a loose pair of lips, but he wasn't joking. "Sorry about that, Grace! This morning Arthur came to my shop and bought a bunch of thermal buckets. Said he was going to sell boxed lunches. You didn't tell him to do that?"
Grace: "..."
"Wait, there's more. Arthur even bought an electric food truck. Before I came over here, I told my wife that Arthur sure knows how to hustle. Running this place wasn't enough; he didn't want to be looked down on, so he's starting his own hustle too."
"Grace, you seriously didn't put him up to this?"
The entire diner burst into laughter, finding Grace's stunned reaction hilarious. Another customer who had been there yesterday added, "Hey Grace, where's that woman who was helping out yesterday? Was she Arthur's distant relative? Gotta say, she was a hard worker. Kept the place spotless."
"Grace, you don't think Arthur bought the truck for her, do you? If he's off selling lunches, he won't have time to help you here anymore."
"You better give him a call, Grace. Let's hope we're just talking nonsense."
Grace stamped her foot in pure fury. The only reason she hadn't called Arthur last night was to keep bad karma away from Lucian's competition. And how did he repay her? By buying a food truck for some other woman? Was this how he proved his devotion to her?!
How dare he step out of line and act like she didn't exist! Grace marched to the counter and snatched her phone. She was going to scream at him, but then she paused. If he wanted to buy a food truck for some hussy, what did it matter to her?
Wait. That pushover Arthur was probably just playing hard to get! Yes, that was it. Amber must have put him up to this. Since Grace refused to marry him, he was flirting with other women to make her jealous.
He wanted her to concede? He wanted her to blindly hand over the rest of her life to him? In his dreams! She wasn't that stupid.
