"What?!"
Lucian stood rooted to the spot, completely utterly floored. "Mr. Lambert..."
"Don't be discouraged, Lucian. Everyone stumbles. Both you and Amber had the correct approach to the problem, but you weren't careful enough. You miscalculated right here."
The principal took a piece of chalk and circled the fatal error on the board.
Lucian's brain short-circuited. His pupils dilated, and he forgot how to breathe. It was quite possibly the first time in his life he had ever tasted true defeat.
Since childhood, especially during the years he was sponsored by Sharif, Lucian had always believed he stood above the rest.
He stared at the chalkboard. The circled error mocked him mercilessly.
"How is that possible?"
Sharif let out a soft sneer. "Didn't I emphasize checking your answers thoroughly?"
The little fox had barely won, but her logic and precision were undoubtedly sharper than Lucian's.
—She really had been hiding her true strength.
During their initial meeting, he assumed she had just scraped together enough prep to secure the sponsorship. Sharif hadn't expected her to unleash everything during a simple school Olympiad, as if she were determined to reclaim every ounce of glory she had ever yielded.
The fallout between these childhood sweethearts was absolutely brutal! Whoever ended up marrying her in the future would have to worship the ground she walked on. This level of vindictiveness was honestly terrifying.
"Do you know why you lost, Lucian?"
Amber walked toward him, her eyes practically overflowing with mockery, barely concealing the hatred of being murdered in her past life. "You lost because of your arrogance. You don't even realize it, do you? Whether it's taking an exam or living your life, you're entirely blinded by your own ego. You genuinely believe the world revolves around you."
"Do you know what happened during every single exam? I always checked your work. I covered up your sloppy mistakes and hid all your bad habits. The only reason you secured that sponsorship, became number one, and built your entire future was because of me. I played the maid, cleaning up your messes step by step, asking for absolutely nothing in return!"
*And you killed me!*
"How does it feel to choke on your own karma, Lucian? But don't worry, this is just the beginning. In this life, I am going to stand at a height you can never reach, and I will look down on you as you suffer."
Tears pricked Amber's eyes. Over two decades of unconditional devotion in her past life had been reduced to ash. She was furious, but she was also incredibly lucid. "Starting today, your title as the number one student is dead and buried. Turn around. Look at everyone's faces as they watch you fail. Burn their disappointment into your memory."
Just like she had to!
As if possessed, Lucian turned slowly to face the audience.
The voices that had just been screaming his name as the champion were now whispering the most venomous insults imaginable.
