Two Reborn, One Throne novel Chapter 80

Joanne hadn't expected that, even in this state, Lucian's primary concern would still be his promise to her.

He really was completely obsessed with her.

Of course, that was only because he hadn't discovered her true colors yet. Once he did, he'd be no different from any other man.

"Lucian, don't apologize. Please, don't say that."

"Amber brought in heavy hitters. We're broke and powerless; we can't fight someone like Sharif Madison. Instead of worrying about the money, we should be worrying about the fallout. When you go to school tomorrow, people are going to look at you differently. And..." Joanne put on her most sympathetic face, "what are you going to tell Grace?"

Lucian pulled her into a tight embrace, his voice thick with emotion. "Joanne, you're always so kind. Why are you so perfect?"

He truly had struck gold with her. Even at a time like this, she was still putting his feelings first.

Unlike Amber, who knew exactly how desperately he needed that fifty thousand, yet still ruthlessly ripped it away from him.

He had let her win once, wasn't that enough? How much more did she expect him to sacrifice for her?

Just then, a massive, heavily tattooed man approached, flanked by three thugs gripping baseball bats.

"Found 'em. Grab the girl!"

Lucian's face drained of color as he instinctively shoved Joanne behind him.

The moment Joanne heard the man's voice, her legs started trembling. "W-Wade..."

It was Wade, one of her father's associates, whom she had hired to put on a show.

She couldn't be blamed for playing dirty. Lucian had promised he'd win, but now her fifty grand was gone. After putting up with him for this long, she had to force him to cough up the money somehow.

Besides, the top scorer got a three-hundred-thousand-dollar valedictorian scholarship.

"Joanne, you sure made yourself hard to find. The Olympiad's over, right? Where's my money? I'm the only one nice enough to give you this much extra time." Wade took a drag from his cigarette, playing the menacing loan shark perfectly.

Joanne burst into tears, dropping to her knees. "Wade, please, give me a few more days! The competition... the competition..." Joanne purposefully stammered, refusing to say the words 'Lucian lost.'

Wade hated it when people cried over debts. He threw his cigarette on the ground. "Cut the crap and stop crying. You don't have the money? Fine. You're coming with me."

He lunged forward and grabbed Joanne by the hair. Lucian instantly tried to block him. "Let her go!"

*Smack!*

Wade kicked Lucian viciously in the stomach.
