Clara pressed her lips together. She knew that in Emmett’s heart, she was no longer the woman she used to be.
“You know, Ricardo came to me several times, insisting you weren’t that kind of person, that you must have been threatened. I calmed down, I thought about it, and I started to believe him. I brought you here to talk, I had people look into your story… I was hoping to hell he was right!”
Emmett let out a cold laugh. “But what did you do? Huh? You told me you were pregnant with Elio’s child! And now that I’ve dragged you back here, you change your story and say the baby is mine! Clara, doesn’t that sound ridiculous even to you? If you were me, would you believe it?”
“No…” Clara lowered her head. “I know you’ll never believe me again.”
But the baby really was his!
She didn’t know what had happened or how, but she knew Elio’s words on the phone weren’t a lie.
She’d had her own doubts before. Given Elio's character, it seemed unlikely that anything would have happened between them that day.
Before she knew about the baby, she’d only half-believed Elio’s claim. She thought he was just saying it to keep her by his side. If Elio were the type to take advantage, he would have had countless opportunities over the years abroad. Back then, he was the only one she could rely on. Even if it was just to repay his kindness, she wouldn’t have refused him.
But he never asked.
That proved Elio wasn’t the type to force himself on her. He wasn’t driven by lust.
When she learned about the baby, her world had shattered. Her mind felt like it was filled with cement; the thought alone caused splitting headaches.
Just as Clara was debating whether to try and explain again, a frantic knocking came from the door, followed by Sophia’s voice.
“Son, I heard you found Clara? Open the door, I need to see her!”
