Sophia lunged at her, grabbing the front of her shirt and shaking her violently. “You murderer! I swear, I won’t let you get away with this! Give me back my butler! I… I’m taking you to the police right now! I’ll make you rot in jail! You’ll pay for this with your own blood!”
Emmett saw Clara’s ashen face and instinctively started to move toward them, to stop his mother.
But after a slight shift, he froze.
Was the Clara in front of him even worth saving anymore?
“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!” Sophia screamed, slapping at her face and body again and again.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry… I never meant for this to happen…” Clara mumbled, dazed and distant, as if Sophia were hitting someone else, as if the blows weren’t landing on her own body.
Seeing Clara’s vacant state, Emmett finally grit his teeth. He strode forward, grabbed his mother’s arm, and stepped between them. “That’s enough! I will handle this. You should go.”
Sophia looked up, shocked at her son. “Don’t tell me you’re going to protect her even after this? The butler served our family for decades! If not for his contributions, then at least for his loyalty! Are you really going to keep defending this bitch?”
“I’m not defending her! But can’t you see she’s not even reacting? Don’t hurt your hand. Besides…” Emmett’s fingers clenched into a fist as he forced out the words, “She’s pregnant.”
“What? That bitch is pregnant? Whose child? Is it yours?”
“Don’t worry about whose it is for now. Go wait for me. If Clara is really responsible for what happened to the butler, I won’t let it slide. You can rest assured of that.”
Though Sophia was still seething, she saw the look on her son’s face and didn’t dare argue further. She shot Clara one last venomous glare and turned to leave.
Suddenly…
