Ruby took in Naomi’s devastated expression and handed her a tissue. “What’s going on, Naomi? You said Arabella and Matthew went to the mall… then what? What happened?”

Only after Ruby pressed her further did Naomi finally speak, her voice barely a whisper. “They were holding hands…”

Ruby’s eyes went wide. “What? Holding hands? Already? It hasn’t been that long! So Arabella just went behind your back and got with Matthew?”

“I knew she was trouble from the start. You were always so nice to her, giving her the benefit of the doubt, and look how she repays you. Her true colors are finally showing.”

Naomi, already heartbroken, felt a fresh wave of misery at Ruby’s words. Silent tears began tracing paths down her cheeks.

Seeing Naomi cry quietly, Ruby’s angry rant tapered off. Her tone softened. “Hey, if you need to let it out, just cry. It’s just us here.”

But Naomi had her pride. She drew a shaky breath, fighting back the tears, and looked at Ruby. “I… I don’t want to go home right now. Can I stay with you for a bit?”

“Of course you can. But hiding out here isn’t really dealing with it, you know? We should figure out a way to push back. Make Arabella pay for what she did. We can’t just let her waltz off with Matthew.” A hard glint settled in Ruby’s eyes.

“My head’s all messed up right now. I can’t think straight,” Naomi said weakly.

“Don’t worry about it. I’m here. I’ll help you figure out how to handle her,” Ruby said, her voice firm with reassurance.

Hearing Ruby stand so firmly in her corner, Naomi felt a small, fragile warmth in her chest.

“Hey, have you even eaten breakfast yet?” Ruby asked, her concern shifting to practical matters. Given how early Naomi had shown up on her doorstep, it seemed unlikely.

Naomi shook her head.

“Well, perfect timing then. Eat with me. We can talk this over while we eat.” Ruby slid a plate of avocado toast across the kitchen island to her.

“Ruby… thank you. Really,” Naomi said, her eyes welling up again.

If it had been her, she would have made a scene right there. She’d have loved to see the shame on both their faces.

“I… I didn’t actually see it myself.” Naomi admitted, looking down at her plate. “I saw a post this morning. On social media. There were… a bunch of pictures. Of them together. Looking close.” She haltingly explained everything she’d seen online.

Ruby’s brow furrowed immediately. “A post? Online? You didn’t see it with your own eyes?”

“Yeah.” Naomi nodded, her voice thick.

“She’s been so sneaky about it, hiding everything. If some blogger or paparazzi hadn’t snapped those photos and put them online, I’d probably still be in the dark.” Naomi said, anger finally cutting through her sadness.

“Ugh, I told you she’s shady! Well, now that she’s been caught on camera, there’s only so deep she can bury it, right? The cat’s out of the bag.

“Someone with character that low deserves to be exposed. The sooner, the better,” Ruby added, a note of grim satisfaction in her voice.

“Exposing her is one thing… but doesn’t that mean they got pictures of Matthew, too? People might recognize him,” Naomi said, her tone a mix of hurt and a lingering, frustrating concern for Matthew.

“Naomi, why are you being so nice about this? After what they both did to you, why are you still worried about him?” Ruby looked at Naomi, baffled.

“He’s still my fiancé, technically. I know him. I really don’t think he’d go after Arabella on his own. She must have pulled something. You know how she is–always hanging around, wearing him down until he just gives in.” Naomi neticulously placed all the blame squarely on Arabella’s shoulders. She was the immediate threat.

“You’re probably right. She’s been over at Roberts house all the time lately, so she’s had plenty of chances to be around Matthew.

“For all we know, she begged him to take her to the mall.”
