Chapter 256 The Test of Skill
“Come on, it’s almost time. We should head in,” Naomi said calmly.
Ruby frowned, muttering under her breath, “How can you be so calm about this, Naomi?”

“The evaluation is what matters right now. Everything else can wait,” Naomi replied, already walking toward the building.
“Hey… wait for me.” With a huff, Ruby hurried to catch up.
Soon, they entered the testing lab.
The evaluator was already present. Seeing them, he gestured. “Take your assigned stations.”
“Alright.” They nodded and found their seats.
Naomi and Arabella were seated side–by–side, while Ruby took the station directly behind Arabella.
“Did you even log enough practice hours to meet the minimum? How can you just show up for the eval? Aren’t you worried you’ll fail and humiliate yourself?” Ruby sneered, directing her words at Arabella’s back.
“Worry about your own performance,” Arabella replied, her tone cool.
Whether she passed or failed was none of Ruby’s business.
Ruby’s expression darkened, her teeth clenched. “We’ll see how long that smug attitude lasts.”
“Relax, I’ve seen her skills firsthand,” Lucas cut in disapprovingly. “Meanwhile, you two bypassed the standard training progression to push your way onto this assessment list. Let’s see who’s embarrassed by the end of it.”
“What do you mean?” Arabella asked Lucas, confused.
Lucas explained, a note of irritation in his voice. “I only submitted the assessment application for you. But when the official roster was posted, all three of your names were on it.”
He had only asked his colleagues briefly and heard that the other two had made separate, direct requests.
“We started our training before she did. If she’s ready for the assessment, then we definitely are. We have to be better than her,” Ruby shot back defiantly.
She had overheard by chance that Arabella was scheduled for the assessment and immediately discussed it with Naomi. They agreed they couldn’t let Arabella get ahead. Having started earlier, they should be more advanced.
“This isn’t about who started when. It’s about demonstrated competency,” Lucas stated flatly, having little faith in their actual abilities.
“You’re just biased, Lucas! It’s not fair!” Ruby’s face flushed with anger, her features tightening.
What had Arabella done to make Lucas favor her so blatantly?
Naomi shot Ruby a warning glance and spoke up softly, “Lucas, it’s not just about the timing. It’s that our original instructor, Kyle, was injured and has been away. Otherwise, our evaluation would have been scheduled sooner.”

Arabella raised a brow slightly. Naomi’s words clearly implied they had been assessment–ready for a while.

“Exactly! And Kyle arranged for other certified instructors to work with us. We’ve been training consistently, unlike some people who haven’t even shown up for the official curriculum,” Ruby sniffed, utterly convinced Arabella would fail.
“No need for explanations. Whether you test or not is your business,” Lucas said dismissively before turning back to Arabella. “Just stay focused. Treat it like any other practice session.”
Arabella gave a slight nod of acknowledgment, then turned her attention to the flight simulator console, beginning her pre-
evaluation checks.
Watching Lucas‘ supportive demeanor toward Arabella, Ruby felt a fresh wave of anger.
“Time’s up. The assessment begins now,” the evaluator announced. “You all know the parameters. Begin the sequence. A clean run with no simulated crashes or protocol deviations constitutes a pass.”
Hearing this, the room grew tense. Ruby finally stopped arguing and initiated her simulation.
A quiet intensity settled over the lab, broken only by the occasional hum of machinery and the soft clicks of controls. Minutes ticked by…
Arabella remained composed, her movements on the controls smooth and assured. She followed the on–screen directives and data parameters precisely, working through each task methodically.
Beside her, Naomi was also fully concentrated, worried that a single lapse would lead to a mistake.
“Oh no! No, no… Ah!” A series of panicked exclamations came from Ruby’s station as she fumbled with the controls, only to watch helplessly as her simulation ended in a violent crash.
“Ruby Peterson: assessment failed,” the evaluator declared after checking the log.
“This simulator is glitchy!” Ruby grumbled, slapping the armrest in frustration. It had to be the equipment’s fault.
But with the failure logged, there was nothing to be done. She reluctantly vacated her seat and went to stand at the side, waiting for Naomi.
“You can do it, Naomi,” Ruby whispered, unable to resist offering quiet support and hoping Naomi would outperform Arabella.
