“If it’s for his own good, then please keep your self–righteousness to yourself.” Arabella’s gaze was icy. “Don’t forget, he’s an adult. He has his own way of doing things and the right to make his own decisions.”
He wasn’t her puppet to control.
Freya ground her teeth in anger, glaring back. “So you’re determined to defy me, is that it?”
Arabella met her stare frankly. “He has the right to choose his own path.”
“Edward, you tell her–you choose to come home with me!” Freya commanded.
The right to choose?
She would make this girl see exactly what that choice would be!
Edward clenched his jaw and remained silent.
“Say something!” Freya urged impatiently.
When Edward still didn’t speak, Freya put on a deeply wounded expression. “You’re not seriously thinking of cutting us off, are you?”
Hearing this, Edward took a deep breath and spoke with firm resolve. “Mom, I don’t want to cut ties. But I’m not going home with you. I have things I need to do.”
“What things could you possibly have to do?” Freya frowned, convinced it was just a poor excuse.
Looking at his mother, Edward saw no choice but to be direct. “I’m starting my own company.”
“You? Starting a company?!” Freya acted as if she’d heard a joke, immediately dismissing him. “You’ve hardly been out in the world. What do you know about running a business?”
Edward’s heart ached. This was always the way–his mother never showed trust or support.
“Stop this foolishness. If you want to work in management, I’ll have your uncle find you a position in his company,” Freya said dismissively. “That’s far better than you running around aimlessly out here.”
“I’m not going to work for Uncle,” Edward insisted. “I’m starting my own.”
“With your skills, you’ll lose everything,” Freya snapped angrily. Why wouldn’t this child listen to reason?
Arabella let out a derisive laugh. “Well, that’s hardly your concern. You should worry more about yourself. After all, the Macdonald family has fallen on such hard times, it can’t offer Edward any real help now.”
You’re practically bankrupt yourselves, yet you dare to mock and belittle him?
They’d be lucky not to drag Edward down with them.
Struck where it hurt, Freya’s face paled with rage. “That’s because Carter was incompetent! Our Clark family isn’t so weak!”
“Please!” Arabella rolled her eyes. “The Clark family?

“If it weren’t for those freeloaders from the Clark family, the Macdonald family wouldn’t have fallen so quickly.” How dare she bring them up!
Freya’s expression shifted immediately. “How do you know about that?”
Arabella shrugged. “If you don’t want people to know, you shouldn’t have done it.”
“What… are you two talking about?” Edward’s face had gone ashen. He had heard the words, but they didn’t seem to make sense.
Freya’s heart sank. She quickly tried to explain it away. “It’s nothing. Don’t listen to her nonsense. She’s just trying to turn you against us.”
“So… what Arabella said is true?” Seeing his mother’s reaction, he felt he understood.
Freya panicked and, hardening her heart, turned her fury back on Arabella. “You little troublemaker! I knew you were behind this! Are you trying to destroy our family?”
‘Mom, what does this have to do with Arabella?” Edward asked, his voice strained. This was completely irrational.
‘If it weren’t for her, would you be defying me like this?” Freya said bitterly.
Edward struggled to keep his tone even. “This is my decision. It has nothing to do with Arabella.”
‘I don’t want to talk about this anymore. I’m not going home,” Edward said, his voice thick with heartbreak.
He couldn’t change that family. If the Macdonald legacy had crumbled, so be it. But he wouldn’t give up. He was determined to ebuild something through his own efforts.
You stubborn boy! You’d rather trust an outsider than your own mother?” Freya was livid.
Mom, you know better than I do whether what Arabella said is true,” Edward replied wearily. “You’re my mother. I won’t dig into vhat happened to the family’s assets. But please, from now on, don’t interfere in my life. I’ll regain everything the Macdonald amily lost through my own hard work.”
dward looked at Arabella, feeling utterly drained. “Arabella, let’s go.”
Alright,” Arabella said, offering her support as they turned to leave together.
reya could only watch them walk away, feeling like she might explode with rage,
