Chapter 39 Persuading Grandpa to Quit
Chapter 39 Persuading Grandpa to Quit
He could brush off advice from anyone else, but Arabella had only just come home. If she made such a request, it was hard for him to simply dismiss it.
His wife, sitting beside him, immediately brightened in agreement. “You see? Arabella says you’ll feel better if you cut back. Let’s see if you’ll listen now.”
Usually when she urged him to sunoke less, he simply ignored her. Now that his own granddaughter was suggesting it, she was curious how he would respond.
Jonathan was surprised that Arabella happened to have something on hand to support quitting. He looked at her and asked, “Arabella, how do you happen to carry something like this with you?”
Seeing his question, Arabella chose her words carefully, not wanting to raise suspicion with a careless reply.
“I studied integrative health for a while. When Naomi mentioned Grandpa enjoys his pipe, I thought to prepare these. Consider them part of his gift,” she said with a warm smile as she handed the small bottle to Ryan. Her expression was natural and her gesture smooth–nothing about it seemed forced.
Watching Ryan accept the bottle, Naomi had little choice but to set her phone down and glance toward Arabella.
She couldn’t help thinking to herself how bold Arabella was. On her very first visit to Hamilton Manor, she dared to challenge Ryan’s habits. Anyone who had tried to persuade him to quit before had been firmly rebuffed. It seemed Arabella wouldn’t escape unscathed today–she really knew how to touch a nerve.
Naomi stayed seated near Ryan, quietly waiting for Arabella to be chastised.
However, after hearing Arabella’s suggestion, Ryan did initially look somewhat displeased, yet he didn’t refuse outright. And once he learned Arabella had studied health sciences, his expression softened noticeably.
He looked at her with growing appreciation and asked, “Arabella, are you in the medical field?”
Arabella answered modestly, “I trained under a mentor for a time. You could say so, in a way.”
Hearing that she had medical training, Ryan’s face lit up. “Is that so? Well then, come take a look at me. How’s my health holding up?”
Naomi was taken aback to see that instead of scolding Arabella as she’d expected. Ryan was actually asking for her opinion.
She was completely stunned.
Was this the magic of a blood bond?
No matter what Arabella did, she seemed to be given grace.
In that moment, Naomi deeply wished she were his biological granddaughter.

Since Ryan had asked, Arabella had little choice but to check his pulse.

Lena, Jonathan, and Florence watched with mild surprise as Arabella performed the gentle, attentive
examination.
Florence leaned toward Jonathan and whispered, “I had no idea Arabella had such skills–she knows how. to do a pulse reading. Our daughter is really impressive!”
Jonathan nodded happily in agreement.
Soon Arabella finished her assessment, and everyone waited to hear what she would say.
Feeling their eyes on her, Arabella turned to Ryan and said gently, “Grandpa, your constitution is quite strong. But because you’ve smoked for many years, there’s some congestion in your lungs. If you cut back from now on and take this supportive formula for a while, you’ll gradually feel clearer. The cough should
case soon.”
Ryan still looked somewhat hesitant.
But then Arabella’s tone became a touch more earnest. “If you don’t reduce your smoking, the congestion may worsen. You’ll likely cough more frequently, which could affect your overall well–being. And Grandma will worry about you even more.”
Arabella sensed that no matter a man’s age, appealing to his care for his partner often worked–they usually listened more when a loved one’s peace of mind was at stake.
Hearing her words, Ryan seemed to soften like a deflating balloon.
As much as he didn’t want to give up his pipe, he knew Arabella was speaking sense.
He might neglect his own health for the sake of a habit, but he couldn’t bear to let his wife spend her days anxious over him.
Looking back, she’d worried about his smoking for most of their life together. Now that they were both older, he couldn’t let her carry that concern into their remaining years.
Meeting Arabella’s gaze, Ryan seemed to reach a quiet decision. Then he said with resolve. “Alright. Since everyone is here today, you can all be my witnesses. Starting now, I’ll cut back on the pipe.
After speaking, he even handed his tobacco pouch to the butler and instructed. “Please put this away.”
Seeing that her husband had finally been persuaded–and by Arabella, no less–Lena quickly added, “Please gather any other smoking supplies in the house as well. From now on, let’s not have any tobacco in sight.”
This was something she’d hoped for most of her married life, and now it was finally happening.
“Yes,” the staff replied, moving to follow her instructions.
Arabella glanced at her grandmother. It was true–the wiser, experienced hand always knew how to make a change permanent. Lena was making sure Ryan wouldn’t be tempted again later.
