The Hamiltons grew more bewildered by the minute. Naomi, listening to their exchange, was utterly lost She could only frown at Arabella. How had Arabella met Matthew after being home for barely two days?

Could it be that Arabella knew about her own engagement to Matthew.

At that thought, the look in Naomi’s eyes toward Arabella cooled considerably.

She wasn’t the only one curious. Aside from the two people involved, every Hamilton in the room was waiting for an explanation.

Noticing the family’s collective attention, Matthew began to sense something was off.

This family seemed unusually affectionate toward Arabella.

Still, he could only tell them the truth. “My grandfather took ill recently. As it happened, Dr. Macdonald treated him yesterday. She’s now overseeing his care as his physician.”

At that, the entire Hamilton family seemed to freeze.

Florence drew a soft breath. “Arabella is your grandfather’s doctor?!”

Arabella had mentioned studying health sciences, but to be treating someone of Robert’s stature?

“He was diagnosed with a mild ischemic episode. Matthew replied calmly. “But Dr. Macdonald’s treatment plan is sound. He’s stable now. Thank you for your concern. Mr. Hamilton.

In thanking Ryan, Matthew had also, intentionally or not, paid Arabella a compliment.

Ryan nodded, reassured.

Then he looked at Arabella with unmistakable pride. Just as I’d expect from my granddaughter. You have such skill, yet you’re so modest. Don’t worry–I will listen to you. Starting today, I’m cutting back.”

When Ryan referred to Arabella as his granddaughter, Matthew’s composed expression faltered for a second.

Granddaughter? But her surname was Macdonald. How could she be Ryan’s granddaughter?

Matthew’s mind raced with questions. He glanced toward Naomi, puzzled.

To his knowledge, the Hamiltons had only one daughter–Naomi.

Every time he’d visited before, only Naomi had been present. He’d never seen Arabella. And the one engaged to him was Naomi. How could a granddaughter suddenly appear on the very day he’d come to discuss the engagement?

This was…. unexpected.

Seeing Matthew’s confusion, Ryan smiled warmly. “Forgive me–I assumed since you knew each other, an introduction wasn’t needed. This is Arabella Hamilton, our granddaughter who was only recently welcomed home. She was raised as Arabella Macdonald, but today she has formally joined the Hamilton family.
