“Honestly, I was completely stunned at first,” Florence said, her voice thick with emotion. “I truly never saw it coming. Arabella, you kept that hidden so well.”
“You even told us you were Aletta’s apprentice,” Ethan added, shaking his head slightly.
“That day at Robert’s, it was just easier in the moment, so I went with the apprentice story. Since my real identity isn’t public, it felt like the right cover,” Arabella explained calmly. “I really didn’t mean to keep you all in the dark intentionally.”
“It’s alright, sweetheart. We’re not upset with you–just incredibly surprised,” Florence replied, a warm smile spreading across her face. “We knew you were gifted in medicine, but to find out you’re actually the renowned Aletta… it’s beyond anything we imagined.”
Ethan leaned forward. “So when you said before that everything you did was for Edward… that’s what you meant.”
“That was my main reason, yes. My original motivation, you could say.” Thankfully, it had all worked out in the end.
“Did you keep it from the Macdonalds too?” Frank asked curiously.
Arabella nodded. “Yes. No one in the Macdonald family knows. Actually, until today, the only person outside of you who knew was a close friend of mine.”
“Don’t worry–your secret is safe with us,” Frank said, his gaze steady and sincere.
Arabella smiled softly. “Thanks, Frank.”
If her identity ever got out, it would undoubtedly bring a mountain of unwanted attention and complications.
“Arabella, about Naomi…” Florence began hesitantly, searching for the right words.
“Are you asking me to go easy on her, Mom?” Arabella finished gently.
Florence shook her head. “Your father and I talked about it. We’ve decided to stay out of it. You kids should handle this however you think is right.”
They were both her daughters. In a situation like this, taking sides or showing too much leniency could easily backfire.
“Understood,” Arabella replied, though she didn’t elaborate on what exactly she planned to do.
After today, it was pretty obvious Naomi had been working with Ruby.
Not that it was much of a shock–those two had always been close.
“Mom, Dad, it’s been a long day. You both should get some rest,” Ethan suggested, looking at Jonathan and Florence with concern.
“Alright, we’ll head upstairs for a bit,” Jonathan agreed, rising from his seat.
Florence stood as well. “Arabella, honey, you should rest too. It’s been exhausting for you.”
“I will, Mom,” Arabella promised.
Once their parents had gone upstairs, Ethan turned to Arabella. “Seriously though, what are you thinking about Naomi?”

He was still trying to wrap his head around what she’d done. He’d warned her more than once to keep her distance from Ruby.
Arabella let out a quiet sigh. “To be honest, I don’t really want to deal with her at all.”
Frank and Ethan exchanged glances. That was it?
“Whatever her reasons were, it’s no surprise she took Ruby’s side. I just can’t get over how poorly thought out their whole plan was. Dealing with them feels like a waste of energy,” Arabella admitted. She was honestly tired of the drama.
“Tell me about it. Compared to you, their little schemes are just… amateur,” Ethan remarked, shaking his head. “Naomi used to be so level–headed and sharp. How did she get mixed up with Ruby’s nonsense and not know when to walk away?”
Arabella’s expression turned thoughtful. “Either you never really saw who she was, or Ruby’s influence rubbed off on her over time.”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking,” Ethan said with a resigned shrug. “I tried talking to her, telling her not to spend so much time with Ruby, but she never listened.”
“Hopefully she learns something from all this,” Frank said quietly.
“I hope so too. At least I don’t want Mom and Dad getting hurt over her again.” It had been clear earlier that Jonathan and Florence were both disappointed and hurt by Naomi’s actions.
“Agreed,” Frank said with a nod.
Arabella offered a small smile. “Look, Mom and Dad raised her. I doubt she’s all bad deep down.”
She refused to believe someone brought up in the Hamilton family could be truly rotten.
“You’re more forgiving than I expected,” Ethan said, a faint laugh in his voice.
Arabella raised an eyebrow. “What, you don’t have any faith in her?”
“Well…” Ethan trailed off, uncertain.
Frank stepped in. “She really was different before. But people change.”
