"Not knowing the basics is one thing, but having a memory like a sieve? That's not just forgetful—that's a hazard," Lucas remarked with an exaggerated sigh. "Seriously, maybe you should reconsider. For your own good, and for everyone else's peace of mind."
"What, you think I can't handle it?" Brielle shot back, clenching her jaw. "Just you wait. I'll earn that pilot's license and wave it right under your nose."
"I'll be here," Lucas replied casually. "But until then, maybe go actually learn what all those buttons do."
With that, he turned his attention away from Brielle and toward Arabella. "I scheduled your checkride for three days from now. You should try to get as much practice in as possible before then."
"Sounds good," Arabella agreed.
"Let's head over to the training area, then," Lucas said, leading the way.
Brielle glared at his retreating back. "Hmph. Big deal, you're an instructor. Just you wait!"
She then spun around and marched off to find her own flight instructor.
Out on the practice field, Arabella shook her head with a light laugh. "When did Brielle even get here? She really went and signed up for flight lessons without telling anyone."
"Remember that group dinner we had?" Lucas explained. "She enrolled that same afternoon."
He'd been pretty surprised himself when he found out. Classic impulsive move—act first, think later.
"She's definitely a go-getter," Arabella observed.
Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Was that meant to be a compliment?"
Arabella shrugged. "There's nothing wrong with pursuing something you're passionate about."
Lucas paused, momentarily speechless.
"Look, instead of focusing on her shortcomings, try seeing what she's good at. Once you do, the little flaws won't seem like such a big deal," Arabella said, offering him a gentle, knowing smile.
Lucas let out a noncommittal grunt but didn't argue further.
"Let's get started. I'll observe from here—shout if you run into anything tricky," he said, shifting back to instructor mode.
Arabella nodded, her expression turning focused. "Got it."
Once inside the cockpit, she began working through the preflight checks smoothly and confidently...
As the plane climbed steadily into the clear blue sky, a slow smile spread across Lucas' face.
"She's something else," he murmured to himself. "Picked everything up so quickly. At this rate, the checkride will be a breeze. She'll have that license in no time."
"Wow, she really is amazing!" Brielle's sudden exclamation made Lucas jump.
He turned, irritation flashing in his eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"I finished reviewing the manuals. My instructor said I could take a break." Of course, she'd come straight to watch Arabella.
"With a memory as reliable as a goldfish's, you sure you shouldn't run through it a few more times?" Lucas teased dryly.
"Psh, don't underestimate me. I don't need your commentary," Brielle retorted, chin lifted proudly as she turned her gaze back to the plane soaring above.
