Chapter 5
Willow’s POV
A thick fog swallowed the estate. With every step I took, the wound on my neck leaked more blood, slowly draining the warmth from my body.
Eventually, I couldn’t push any further. My vision flickered like a dying subway light before cutting out completely.
In the final second before I hit the void, a pair of wide, solid arms caught me.
When I woke up, the ceiling was flooded with harsh white light.
I blinked my way back to reality, staring at high ceilings, a vintage crystal chandelier, and massive streaks of golden sunshine.
“Hey.”
I turned my head stiffly and saw Dan

le my deal with.
He was sitting by the bed, the light catching his tailored black shirt and bronzed skin.
Even in the daylight, his obsidian wolf eyes were terrifying.
“Do you… really need my scent to keep your feral side in check?” I asked, voicing the doubt that had been nagging at me.
Damian let out a soft, dry laugh.
“Willow, I’m a Lycan. If I couldn’t control the beast inside me, I’d have no right to rule this wasteland.”
I remembered our deal: he helped me leave Rowan, and I became his mate.
I wasn’t delusional enough to think I’d be his Luna. To a high-born Lycan, I was just a pawn on a chessboard.
I tried to prop myself up, but the movement sent a jagged bolt of pain through my neck “You can mark me now… just use the other side of my neck.”
He reached out and firmly pressed me back into the mattress.

“No rush. Heal up first, Willow. You’re too thin, and I’m not interested in a woman who’s all skin and bone.”
It was only then that I realized the wounds on my neck and arms had been cleaned and dressed in thick bandages that smelled faintly of herbs.
Damian placed his hand on my head, slowly stroking my dry, brittle hair.
A lump formed in my throat. I threw my arm over my face, biting my lip to stop the shaking, but the tears leaked out anyway.
I had loved Rowan for seven years. I had been naive enough to think that if I was just obedient enough, he’d eventually love me.
Instead, he had held me down while another wolf tore my mark away.
Damian seemed to understand my human fragility.
He didn’t offer empty words; he just put a clean handkerchief in my hand and left the room, the door clicking shut as quietly as a dream.
I don’t know how long I cried that day, but after that, I stayed.
In Damian’s palace, I was free to go wherever I wanted.
Damian didn’t leave much; he’d just sit quietly nearby while I ate or had my bandages changed.
Day by day, the wound on my neck faded into a light pink scar, and my gaunt limbs began to fill out with healthy muscle.
Eventually, I knocked on the door to Damian’s study. I told him I wanted to go back to the subway station where I used to work.
He just said, “Okay. I’ll go with you.”
The midnight wind blew through the tunnels of the transfer station, carrying the familiar scent of rust and grease.
Just as Damian and I were about to head out, a stumbling figure lunged out of the shadows.
“Willow!”
He grabbed my wrist, and I instinctively flinched away.
Damian stepped in, his presence exploding into a terrifying, heavy aura. With a flick of his wrist, he sent the figure flying back several feet and stood firmly in front of me.

Chapter 5
It was Rowan.

His eyes were bloodshot, and his clothes were a total mess-a far cry from his usual polished look. He looked like a rogue on the verge of losing it.
He glared at Damian, his voice raspy and trembling. “Who is he?”
I stepped out from behind Damian. “He’s my mate.”
Rowan’s face twitched. He tried to move toward me again, his hand hovering in the air.
“Come back with me. Willow, the other night was an accident. Lyra was… we can start over.”
“There is no ‘us’ anymore, Rowan.”
His expression turned feral.
“Impossible! You don’t smell like him. He hasn’t marked you yet! You’re my pet-you can’t lie to
me!”
The train’s departure warning echoed through the tunnel. I was done with this.
I walked around Damian and stood right in front of Rowan. I pulled my hair aside to show him the back of my neck.
“See this? I cut your mark out myself. Rowan, you’re free. And so am I.”
He stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief.
