Chapter 7

Willow’s POV

Rowan rushed forward, trying to peel Lyra off me. “Her wolf is unstable,” he grunted. “She doesn’t mean it…”

Lyra let out a piercing shrick and broke free of his grip. She lunged again, her teeth and claws sinking deep into my forearm.

I could actually hear my bones creaking under the pressure of her jaw.

“Ahh-!” I gasped, the wind knocked out of me.

My hand shook as I fished the silver scalpel from my pocket. I pressed the blade hard against Lyra’s throat. “Let go, or I’ll rip your scent glands out myself!”

“Willow, stop!” Rowan panicked, finally dragging her away by force.

“Don’t you dare say my name!” I shoved his hands off me and struggled to my feet, shaking with a mix of fury and pain.

“You want my scent so bad?”

I ripped off my jacket and hurled it at his face. “Fine! Take it! And then get the hell out of my life!”

“What is wrong with you?” Rowan roared.

“I said I wouldn’t hold the potion thing against you! I know I shouldn’t have let her hurt you like that… but I promise, Willow, it’ll never happen again.”

I didn’t waste my breath. I just leveled the blade at his chest.

“Rowan, you make me sick.” My voice was dead, devoid of any emotion.

That was the breaking point. His eyes bled into a deep scarlet-the mark of a losing Alpha.

“You want to kill me? You’d actually kill me just to get back to that Lycan…”

He stepped into the blade, the silver piercing his shirt. One more inch and it would hit his heart.

“If you think I’m letting you go now that you’re back, you’re dead wrong.”

He leaned in, his voice a low, jagged threat.

“I don’t care if the mark is gone. I’ll just mark you again. I’ll bite deeper this time-I’ll make sure you can never wash my scent off.”

He tilted his head, baring his fangs as he aimed for the back of my neck.

He’d finally stopped pretending; he just wanted his pet back.

“Rowan!” A frantic cry came from the shadows, dragging him back.

It was Lyra. She was back to her human form, her face a mess of tears.

“I’m the one who took the potion! I’m sorry… Rowan, I’m so sorry.”

Rowan grabbed her shoulders, his voice cracking. “What did

you say?”

“I stole it… I couldn’t stand watching you go crazy over a human! I was sick of you ignoring my heat pheromones. I just wanted you to mark me while you were out of it… I wanted us to be mates.”

In the werewolf world, using drugs to trick an Alpha into marking you is the ultimate disgrace.

Rowan looked like he’d been struck by lightning. He retracted his fangs, his red eyes wandering over to me in total shock.

“Why… why didn’t you say anything?”

I had said something. That night he kicked my door down and pinned me to the floor, I told him

the truth.

He just didn’t believe me. He’d decided a “lowly human” was only capable of petty jealousy.

I didn’t say a word. I just turned and walked out.

Rowan tried to follow, but Lyra threw her arms around him, begging him not to leave her.

I pushed open the manor doors, and Damian was there, waiting in the mist.

He looked like a shadow carved from stone.

He took me back to his palace. He cleaned and stitched the mess Lyra had made of my arm.

He told me Silas was safe, tucked away in a place Rowan would never find.

I watched his cold, focused profile as he worked. “Why are you doing all this for me?” I whispered.

Before he could answer, a guard knocked with an urgent message.

He

gave me a reassuring look and stepped out to handle it.
