She insisted on pulling me into the middle seat.
Then she said, all passive-aggressive, "You're the darling of their little group, so of course you get to be the center of attention."
With that, she toasted me again. And again. Three glasses in a row.
She couldn't hold her liquor well, and her face was already flushed. Her words got even more out of line.
She pointed at me and then at my other childhood friends. "You're all so close with Isabelle. Don't tell me there's nothing shady going on, right?"
“Oh, I know the type. Acting like you're 'just friends' while doing all sorts of intimate stuff behind the scenes. I once knew this guy and girl who swore they were platonic, but they'd slept together and she'd even had a couple of abortions. So disgusting...”
The guys were getting pissed.
Ray, who's my closest friend in the group, took a deep breath and tried to reason with her. "Hey, that's going too far. We're just friends who grew up together."
"Isabelle was the best student in our neighborhood. She used to tutor all of us, and over time, we all just became one big group."
Hailey just sneered.
"I've seen this act a million times. Who's gonna believe that?"
I clenched my fists and asked her, "So what do you want to do about it?"
"There's no such thing as a 'platonic friendship' between a guy and a girl. I don't believe it, and I never will. And I'm damn sure not giving Asher Bennett any opportunity to cheat."
Then, she stared daggers at Asher. "So, tell me. Are you choosing me or her?"
Asher looked completely exasperated.
"You! I choose you, for God's sake."
"Even if Isabelle was the last woman on Earth, I wouldn't be interested. She can't even begin to compare to you."
"You've got an amazing body, you're gorgeous. And then look at her... she's skinny as a beanpole. Me, like her? I'd have to be blind!"
"Asher, what the hell are you saying?"
