Hailey's whole expression shifted, and she beamed at me.
"Isabelle, I'm getting married tomorrow, and one of my bridesmaids just bailed last minute. Can you fill in for her?"
I immediately refused.
I didn't want to deal with the inevitable drama that would make everyone miserable.
Unbelievably, Asher, who must have lost his mind, chimed in.
"Yeah, Isabelle, you're my best friend. It makes sense for you to be Hailey's bridesmaid."
"I don't want to do it."
"How am I supposed to get married without a bridesmaid tomorrow?"
Hailey started guilt-tripping me again.
"Please, Isabelle, just do me this one favor..."
Thinking of Mr. Bennett, still in the hospital, I took a deep breath. "Fine"
I had no idea that this would be the worst decision I'd ever make.
The next morning.
I was wide awake at four a.m., putting on the bridesmaid dress.
I had clearly told Hailey I was a size small, but she'd ordered me a large.
The dress hung on me like I was draped in a blanket.
It looked ridiculous.
But I didn't care anymore.
I just wanted the wedding to be over with.
I spent the entire morning rushing around.
Meanwhile, Hailey and the other two bridesmaids did nothing but kick back and snack on chips, their legs crossed.
They were pointing and whispering behind my back.
"So that's the 'cool girl' who's secretly a total skank? So gross... She must be dying inside, watching Asher marry you..."
"As if. She's reaching way above her league. Why would Asher ever be into her?"
I clenched my fists, on the verge of ripping her hair out.
But just then, the groomsmen arrived.
I didn't realize until the groom's party showed up that Asher had swapped out his groomsmen.
Ray and his other two childhood friends were gone.
The new groomsmen were friends of Hailey's.
These guys didn't seem like they were here for a wedding; they were acting more like thugs.
They skipped all the traditional wedding games and just kicked the door in.
