Unwanted Blood (Harper) novel Chapter 37

Chapter 37

“Let go of me!” I twisted, my free hand clawing at his wrist. He didn’t budge. His grip tightened.

“Harper!” Ryder came out of nowhere. He hit the man from the side, shoulder first, with the kind of force that made both of them stagger. His fist connected with the man’s jaw-a sharp, ugly crack.

The man’s grip loosened. I wrenched my arm free and stumbled backward, hitting the brick wall of the café.

The stranger recovered fast. He shoved Ryder off, glanced at me for a split second, and then ran.

He bolted down the alley, his boots pounding on wet concrete, and disappeared around the

corner.

Colton sprinted past me in pursuit, but by the time he reached the mouth of the alley, the man was already gone.

He stopped, chest heaving, his hands on his knees, and cursed loudly.

Ryder was in front of me before I could breathe.

His hands were on my shoulders, his chest rising and falling fast. “Are you hurt? Did he touch you? Did he-”

“I’m fine.” I pushed his hands off. My legs were shaking so badly I couldn’t stand straight. My arm throbbed where the man had grabbed me.

But I wasn’t hurt.

Ryder stepped back. His hands dropped to his sides, but they were trembling too.

Back at the apartment, nobody spoke for the first ten minutes.

I sat on the couch with a cold glass of water. Colton paced by the window, phone pressed to his ear, speaking in short, clipped sentences. Ryder stood in the kitchen doorway, staring at the floor, his arms crossed so tight his knuckles were white.

Then Colton’s phone rang.

He answered it, listened, and his entire expression changed.

“Martha vanished!” he said.

My head snapped up. “She vanished?”

288 Vouchers

“Yes, we went to her last known address, but by the time we got there, she was already gone. The room showed signs of a rushed departure.” Colton nodded. “But before she went, she sent a package.”

He looked down at his phone screen, his brow furrowing.

“To the Gadigal Center. Addressed to you.”

“To me?” I stood up so fast the glass slid off the couch cushion and hit the floor. “What kind of package?”
