Unwanted Blood (Harper) novel Chapter 61

Chapter 61

Colton’s voice broke the silence. “Got her.”

I was at his shoulder before he finished the sentence.

The screen showed an old hospital employment database. Since the IT department migrated to a new platform and left the old one running in limbo.

A name. A hire date. A resignation date. And under “final payroll processing”.

Outstanding wages transferred to Vancouver Community Credit Union – Account ending in 4782.

The account details were partially masked, but the bank routing code was visible.

“Can we get the account holder’s address?” I asked.

“No problem.” Colton called our lawyer. After he finished, he said. “The court order for the Vancouver Trust box pushed things through. We have an active investigation subpoena. I can get the credit union to release the account info within the hour.”

Forty-three minutes later, a PDF arrived in Colton’s inbox.

Account holder: Rachel Summer. Address: 1287 West 18th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V6H 1B7,

Canada

I printed the address. Held the paper in my hand.

“Found her,” I said quietly.

Colton stood. “When do we leave?”

“Now.”

Harper’s POV

I read Ryder’s message.

We miss you. I’m sorry.

I didn’t reply. I didn’t know how.

I hadn’t forgiven them I couldn’t forgive them. The fact that we were on the same side now didn’t erase any of that. It just meant the war had changed shape

When Westbrook was done, when the truth was out, we would go back to what we were Strangers who shared blood.

I locked my phone and put it on the nightstand. Then I went into the bathroom and ran the shower as hot as it would go.

The steam numbed my shoulders. The water beat against the back of my neck and washed away my exhaustion.

When I stepped out, wrapped in a towel, my mind was clearer. I pulled on a robe and was reaching for my clothes when the door opened.

Adrian came in, holding a mug.

Then his eyes went to me-hair wet, robe loose, steam still rising from my skin, and I saw him swallow. Then he turned his head sharply toward the wall.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t. Anyway, I can wait outside,” he said, his voice slightly rougher than usual

I closed the door without a word, changed quickly into a t-shirt and jeans, and opened it again.

He was still there. He handed me the mug.

“Hot milk,” he said. “You didn’t eat much at breakfast.”

I took it. The ceramic was warm against my palms. I didn’t drink.

“Your brothers,” he said. “Any progress?”

“They’re looking into it. If they find something, I’ll tell you.”

He nodded, was going to leave.

“Adrian.”

He stopped. Looked back over his shoulder. The hallway light was behind him, casting his face

into shadow.

“You said something at breakfast,” I said. My voice was quiet. “You said you want him to fall more than I do. What do you mean? You know, he’s your father.”
