Chapter 92

Harper’s POV

I stood a few steps away from him, my fingers curled around the small bundle in my pocket, my heartbeat so fast it almost drowned out the airport announcements.

When I heard him ask, “Were you looking for me?” my throat tightened like someone had closed their hand around it.

I took a deep breath. Tried to make my voice sound normal.

“No, you forgot something.”

I walked two steps forward, pulled the neatly folded sterile gauze and the small roll of medical tape from my pocket, and held them out to him.

“You said you’d change it before you left. I knew you wouldn’t have.”

He looked down at the gauze in my palm and took it. Then he took one big step forward and pulled me into his arms.

I staggered half a step from the force of it, my face pressing against his shoulder, my nose catching the faint smell of laundry detergent mixed with the cold air from the airport ventilation. His arms came around my back and pulled tight. My heart pounded so hard that I could hear it beating in my ears.

My hands hovered in midair for two seconds. Then, slowly, they lowered and gripped a small handful of fabric at the side of his jacket.

The hug lasted about five seconds.

He let go first, but we were still close enough to feel the warmth of each other’s breath.

He looked down at me. His voice was lower than before. “After all this is over, would you…consider being my girlfriend?”

I froze. My mouth opened. My mind went blank. Several seconds passed before I found my voice, and when I did, it came out halting.

“We… we can’t.”

He didn’t wait for me to finish. He shook his head slightly. “I know what you’re going to say We’ re enemies. He’s your brother. My father killed your mother-I know all of that ”

He paused. “But I’ll break through every one of those barriers. It might take a long time, but I want to try”

He looked at me. His eyes were so serious it couldn’t have been a spur-of-the-moment impulse

“If one day in the future, those barriers are gone, will you give me a chance?”

I looked away from his face.

The airport announcement came again. Last boarding call for his flight.

Adrian turned his head toward the gate, then looked back at me. He slipped the roll of gauze into his pocket.

“I really have to go now.”

I nodded. “Yeah.”

He turned and took two steps away. Then he stopped. Turned back. Walked to me in three long

strides.

Before I could react, he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. Then he stepped back, turned, and walked toward the gate without looking back.

I stood there. The warmth of where he’d kissed me lingered on my lips.

I raised my hand and touched my own mouth. And the corner of my mouth curled up. I couldn’t stop it if I tried.

I watched his back as it moved through the crowd, as he scanned his boarding pass at the gate, and then disappeared into the corridor.

I stood there for another thirty seconds. Then I finally turned and started walking back.

My steps were so light I was almost floating. I walked in the wrong direction for a few paces before realising it, and when I did, I smiled, shook my head, and turned around.

I walked out of the terminal and got into the back seat of a taxi. The driver asked where to. I gave the safe house address, then turned my face to the window and watched the sunlit runway blur past. I couldn’t stop smiling.
