Unwanted Blood (Harper) novel Chapter 98

Chapter 98

After I came out of the ward, I sat down on the bench in the corridor. Colton stood beside me and checked the time.

“The police station asked me to come in for a statement. The full dashcam data and the vehicle inspection report both need someone to go over and sign off.”

I nodded. “Go. I’ll stay here.”

Colton hesitated for a moment. Then he turned and left.

The corridor quieted down again. The only sound was the occasional roll of a nurse’s equipment cart passing by.

Not long after, Grayson and Logan came down the corridor from the other end. They stopped in front of me, exchanged a glance-like they were silently pushing the other to speak first.

Grayson finally went first. “Harper… thank you for coming. We were both very worried about Ryder last night. If it weren’t for you-” He stopped. “We owe you a thank you. And we owe you… an apology.”

Logan, standing beside him, nodded. His eyes dropped to the spot on my arm where the cotton ball still covered the needle mark. He didn’t look

away.

I was silent for a few seconds after they finished. Then I looked up, without dodge.

“Stop apologising. Those things… are in the past.”

Grayson and Logan both froze for a second. Then Grayson recovered first. He smiled and gave a small, quiet nod.

After the atmosphere loosened a bit, Logan asked, “How long are you planning to stay here?”

I thought about it. “Until his condition is more stable.”

Grayson and Logan exchanged a glance. Something bright flashed in their

eyes.

Grayson jumped in immediately. “Then where are you staying? I’ll have someone arrange something near the hospital—”

Logan cut him off. “Need you to arrange it? I already booked a hotel nearby last night. Two rooms.”

Grayson frowned. “When did you book that?”

Logan, matter-of-fact: “Last night. The moment she arrived, I thought of it.”

Grayson: “Then I’ll buy her some food. That’s fine, right?”

Before Logan could object, Grayson turned and walked off down the other end of the corridor.

About ten minutes later, he came back carrying three or four bags-hot cocoa, sandwiches, a box of cut fruit, and what looked like a small cake from the bakery just outside the hospital. He set all the bags on the empty chair next to me.

“Not sure what you like, so I got a bit of everything.”

I looked down at the pile of things. Before I could say anything, Logan had already reached into the bag, pulled out the hot cocoa, and replaced it

with a cup of warm water beside my hand.

“You just finished a transfusion. No caffeine.”

Grayson glared at him but didn’t argue. He took the hot cocoa back and drank it himself.

Over the next few days, Grayson and Logan started taking turns competing for my attention.

When I went to the convenience store to buy toiletries, Grayson insisted on coming along. At the checkout counter, he ended up in a tug-of-war with Logan, who had just arrived, over who was going to pay.

“I’ll get it,” Grayson said.

Logan: “Step aside.

They pushed back and forth. The cashier stood there with the barcode scanner in her hand, staring at them in complete bewilderment.

I stood behind them for a while. Eventually, I just handed over the cash myself, took the shopping bag, and walked out.

After that, when I went to the ward, Ryder was already able to sit up against the bed.

I pushed the door open and walked in. Grayson and Logan followed behind me-one carrying fruit, the other holding a container of soup.

Ryder took in the scene, paused, then slowly swept his eyes over the two people crowded in the doorway. Finally, he looked at me. His voice
