After more than ten seconds, Alexander frowned slightly. “Unless something completely unexpected happens, I have no plans to get divorced anytime in the next few decades.”

“Oh?”

She did not believe that.

Alexander kept looking at her. Her features were as gentle as ever, but there was a distance in her eyes that hadn’t been there before. A beat later, he seemed to understand.

“Fiona is my secretary. We work closely, and yes, we get along well, but there is nothing inappropriate between us,” he said evenly. “We’re married. Mrs. Kingsley, if you’re unhappy about something, you can say it. Taking it out on your own body is childish.”

He had seen through her.

Elena cleared her throat, suddenly self–conscious. “Who said I was upset? And who told you I’m unhappy because of her? Forget it. I’m hungry. I’m going to eat.”

She genuinely was hungry.

She had dealt with too much today, including another round of Nathan’s ridiculous behavior.

All she wanted now was food.

She pushed back the blanket and tried to get out of bed, but before she could, Alexander pulled her back and settled her onto his lap.

She caught the scent of his shower gel, clean and understated, mixed with the faint trace of alcohol that had not fully faded.

“You didn’t tell me in advance.” She frowned and gently removed his hand.

Martha had been waiting downstairs anxiously. When she saw them come down together, she quickly brought out the reheated dishes and soup. She had expected tension, but instead they sat across from each other as if nothing had happened.

Elena took a few spoonfuls of the soup. Martha’s cooking was excellent. It was smooth and comforting, the kind that warmed you from the inside out.

She had just finished eating and was about to ask Alexander about seeing his name earlier at Grant’s place when his phone rang.

She glanced up. It was Fiona.

“What is it?” Alexander set down his spoon and answered.

“I’m up. I’m eating… Yes, just follow the schedule. If anything’s unclear, check with Ryan.”
