Nathan felt restless, his mind spinning.

Victoria dismissed it immediately. “He probably came with Sophia. What does Elena even have that Alexander would want? She should take a hard look at herself.”
The more Victoria thought about Elena, the angrier she became. If she could not have Nathan, she would drag the entire Hawthorne family down with her.
“Nathan, what about your father? He’s not young. He can’t stay locked up like this. And if Daniel and Evan find out and tell Charles…”
Only now did fear begin to set in.
They had always stayed ahead of Daniel’s branch of the family. If they lost their footing now, everything could collapse.
“I hired Marcus to represent him. It’s still in the investigation stage. It’ll be fine.”
Nathan checked his phone, reassured by Marcus‘ message.
If Elena refused to withdraw, Marcus Hale was the best in the country. At worst, it would cost money.
The priority was keeping this from Charles.
“This is all Elena being petty,” Victoria muttered. “We hid things from her, yes, but did she ever lack anything these past five years? Everything she had came from the Hawthorne family.”
“Mom, enough.”
Nathan cut her off.
Strangely, when he learned Elena was safe, he had felt a flicker of relief.
Back in the hospital room, Elena exchanged a glance with Sophia.
From the moment Alexander arrived, he had said almost nothing. He sat on the couch, phone in hand, typing quickly. His face was unreadable, but the tension around him was unmistakable.
“Alexander, I just remembered I still have work to finish at the office,” Sophia said suddenly, pressing her palms together apologetically toward Elena before turning to him. “I should head back.”
“Alright,” Alexander replied without looking up.
Sophia slipped out immediately, leaving Elena alone with him.
The silence felt heavier now.
Elena touched her forehead, then scratched lightly at her jaw, searching for something to say.
“So… it’s about dinner time. Have you eaten?”

He did not answer.
Nearly five minutes passed before he finally put his phone down and walked over to the small table.
The hospital meal that had been delivered earlier sat untouched.
“It’s cold now,” Elena said quietly. “If you’re hungry, we can have something else sent over.”
The pressure radiating from him made her voice lower instinctively.
Alexander made a call.
Within twenty minutes, two neatly packed takeout meals arrived from a nearby neighborhood grill. He set up the folding table and unpacked the containers.
One container held slow–braised beef with roasted carrots, finished with a sprinkle of chopped fresh herbs. along with a light side of steamed vegetables.
The other was barbecue ribs glazed in sauce, served with mashed potatoes, a cup of chicken vegetable soup, and a small side salad.
Elena did not like carrots, so she casually slid the beef toward Alexander. “Can you take this one? I really don’t like carrots, okay?”
Alexander’s brow tightened almost imperceptibly, but he did not argue. He switched the ribs over to her side without comment.
