Chapter 148 Hidden Agendas
“I’ll come find you in a bit,” Elena replied before heading over.
Sophia was there as a special guest and had been bored until she saw Elena. She looped her arm through hers. “Elena, how did you end up coming with Aunt Evelyn? She didn’t give you a hard time, did she?”
“No.” Elena said with a small smile.
“I knew it. She looks strict, but she’s actually great once you get to know her.”
Sophia looped her arm through Elena’s and led her farther into the gallery, smiling brightly as she navigated through the crowd.
Elena understood by now that Evelyn only appeared distant on the surface, when in reality she was far more considerate than she let on, and that was precisely why Elena had come tonight intending to choose a piece of jewelry for her, a small but sincere gesture from her as a daughter–in–law.
“Help me take a look,” she said, flipping through the catalog. “What do you think she’d like?”
Meanwhile, Evelyn wandered to another section alone. Several wealthy socialites recognized her but hesitated to approach. Her reserved demeanor was well known, and no one wanted to risk being ignored publicly.
After browsing for a while without finding anything suitable, she called over a staff member. “Do you have anything appropriate for a woman in her twenties to wear daily? These pieces are too flashy.”
The staff member smiled and guided her to another display.
These designs were lighter, more versatile, suitable for professional settings. Evelyn examined them carefully, not noticing someone step up beside her.
“Mrs. Kingsley, Mrs. Kingsley.”
Evelyn snapped out of her thoughts and turned her head, noticing a middle–aged woman standing beside her dressed in a black Chanel–style tweed suit. The tailored set, usually favored by younger women, looked. slightly forced on her, as though she were trying too hard to make it work.
Her hair was pinned up neatly, and she wore a polite, almost overly ingratiating smile.
“Who are you?” Evelyn asked coolly, brushing lightly at the sleeve where the woman had touched her.
“I’m Catherine Hart. Richard is my husband.”
Catherine extended her hand.
Evelyn glanced at it but made no move to shake it. “Is there something you need?”
Catherine’s smile stiffened. This was the first time someone had openly ignored her attempt at politeness, but for Camille’s sake she endured it.
Standing beside Evelyn, she said casually. “I heard your son recently got married.”

“If you have something to say, say it. I don’t enjoy being interrupted,” Evelyn replied.

Catherine inhaled carefully. “It’s just that I’ve heard your son has been spending a great deal of time with my daughter, Elena, and even elevated her to executive president at Velmora Media. The Hart family has always valued integrity. We’ve repeatedly advised Elena not to interfere in other people’s marriages, but she refuses to listen. We don’t want her to continue down the wrong path, so I thought perhaps you might speak with your son.”
Evelyn was known for being decisive and formidable when it came to protecting her family’s name. If she truly believed Alexander was involved in something inappropriate with Elena, she would never let it slide quietly.
Catherine understood that stirring this up might very well damage Elena’s reputation beyond repair, but every time she thought about how wronged Camille had felt, any hesitation disappeared and her judgment tilted firmly in her daughter’s favor.
If anyone was to blame, she told herself, it was Elena for not knowing her place.
“Repeat that,” Evelyn said mildly.
Catherine assumed she had not heard clearly. “I said your son and Elena—”
“No, not that part. You mentioned the Hart family values integrity?”
Evelyn let out a soft laugh. “If that were true, would you have abandoned your biological daughter while favoring an adopted one? Or allowed Camille and Nathan to deceive Elena for five years?”
She looked Catherine up and down. “You’re interesting. About as convincing as that outfit.”
Evelyn never adjusted her words to suit someone’s status. Whether Catherine was Richard’s wife meant nothing to her. No branch of the Hart family could compare to the Kingsleys.
Catherine flushed. “Are you saying you’ll just stand by while your son cheats? I came here out of concern.”
“Focus on your own household,” Evelyn replied event
“The Kingsleys don’t require advice from outsiders.”
She turned back to the display. “I’d like to continue viewing the exhibition without interruption.”
Catherine’s entire body trembled with anger.
She had never met someone as impossible to reason with as Evelyn. She had approached her with what she considered goodwill, and yet Evelyn had dismissed her without the slightest courtesy, as if she were beneath notice.
No matter how furious she felt, she did not dare create a scene in front of Evelyn. If Richard found out she had offended the Kingsleys, his temper would be the first thing she faced when she got home, so she swallowed the humiliation and forced herself to step away.
She did not leave the gallery immediately.
Aside from confronting Evelyn, she had another purpose for coming tonight. There was a particular jewelry set she had had her eye on for quite some time, and she had no intention of walking away without at least taking another look at it.
