Alexander glanced at the bowl, then at her hand, slender and steady as she held it out to him.
After a moment, he reached out and took it. He finished the soup.
By the time they were done eating, Fiona had returned. Alexander paid the bill, then stood.
Fiona asked. “Mr. Kingsley, are we heading back to the office?”
“No,” Alexander said, his tone noticeably lighter than before. “We’re going home.”
Fiona’s gaze flickered subtly.
Alexander turned to Elena. “Come with me.”
Elena had originally planned to head back and get a few more hours of work in, but looking at him now, she could tell refusing wouldn’t go anywhere.
She nodded. “Okay.”
As they walked out of the restaurant, a group of people was just coming in.
The woman leading them spotted Fiona immediately and called out warmly, “Fiona, what a surprise seeing you here.”
Elena stopped mid–step.
Fiona smiled sweetly. “Zoe, it’s been a while.”
Zoe smiled, then noticed Alexander. “Alexander, you’re here too. Tell your mom I said hello.”
Her gaze naturally shifted to Elena. Since they weren’t familiar, she only gave a polite nod.
Elena’s expression tightened just slightly. Her smile was faint, almost automatic.
Then she turned and walked away.
Alexander followed without hesitation.
Zoe frowned, then looked at Fiona. “Who was that? She seemed close to Alexander. I heard he got married recently. I always thought you two would end up together.”
Fiona’s feelings for Alexander had never been a secret.
Anyone close to her family knew.
They had all assumed that once she came back from overseas, marriage would naturally follow.
Instead, he married someone no one had even seen before.
Fiona forced a smile, though it barely held.

Zoe’s expression shifted. “Don’t tell me that was his wife.”
Fiona shook her head quickly. “No… Zoe, it’s not something I can really talk about.”
Zoe immediately filled in the blanks herself. Just another woman trying to latch onto a wealthy man.
She had seen plenty like that.
“Don’t let it bother you,” Zoe said dismissively. “Girls like that rely on their looks and nothing else. Honestly. I doubt Alexander doesn’t have feelings for you. As for the marriage, there’s probably more going on.”
Since she was close to Fiona’s mother, she added a few more comforting words.
Fiona felt worse instead.
So now even that means she’s prettier than me?
Her smile became harder to maintain.
At the same time, Elena’s mood had sunk just as much. If he liked her that much, then why didn’t he just marry Fiona?
Why go through all this trouble to marry her instead?
“Alexander,” Elena said, opening her eyes and looking at him.
It was the first time she had said his name like that, serious and direct.
“What is it?” Alexander asked, hands steady on the wheel as the car slowed at a red light.
Elena looked straight ahead. “My father made me marry you so I could inherit what he left behind. What about you?”
Alexander understood immediately.
“I wasn’t in great health,” he said calmly. “My grandfather wanted someone around for luck.”
He answered without hesitation.
Elena didn’t respond. That’s not the real reason.
If it were, why not Fiona? They understood each other better than anyone. And Fiona clearly wanted to be with him.
She wouldn’t have said no.
Unless, he was the one who didn’t want her.
Elena’s thoughts grew more tangled, her BarnЯg toward him turning increasingly complicated.
The light turned green.
