Chapter 206 Tension Shift
“Ms. Sterling, could you take a quick look at the numbers Clement needs for the report?”
Ryan had arranged for Matteo to step in temporarily, but he clearly wasn’t fully up to speed yet.
Elena glanced over and saw the stress written all over his face, sweat practically beading at his temples. She softened a little. “Sure, pull it up.”
“Thanks, I really appreciate it.”
Matteo quickly opened his laptop and brought up the file.
Most of the report had been filled out, but a few key metrics were still missing.
Elena leaned in slightly, scanning the screen. “Do you have this dataset?”
She tapped a section with her finger. “When we present thisder,
he’s going to ask follow–ups. We
Matteo hesitated. “Not yet… Clement hasn’t sent that over. I’ll just call by legal”
need a complete breakdown ready ahead of time.”:”
He reached for his phone, then froze. “…I left it at my desk.”
now
“I’ll call him,” Elena said, already pulling out her phone. “No need to run back.”
The line rang longer than expected before finally connecting.
“Yeah?”
Clement’s voice came through. Elena paused for half a second.
Why does he sound… off today?
“Clement, we need a set of numbers from your side for this afternoon’s presentation,” Elena said, getting straight to the point. “Matteo just sent you the request.”
She gestured for Matteo to send it again.
He immediately forwarded the file.
“Got it,” Clement replied, his tone flat and distant.
Then he added, noticeably colder, “Our department can handle its own work. There’s no need to involve Ms. Sterling. Also, put Matteo on the phone.”
Elena frowned slightly.
What is that supposed to mean?
Still, she handed the phone over without saying anything. Matteo took it, and within seconds, his expression
marned awkward.

Chapter 206 Tension Shift
“Yeah… okay… I understand…”
The call ended quickly.
Fiisched
He handed the phone back, forcing a small, embarrassed smile. “Ms. Sterling, uh… Clement will send the numbers soon. I’ll take care of the rest myself. Sorry to bother you.”
“It’s fine.” Elena said calmly, passing the laptop back. “Go ahead.”
Matteo nodded and turned to leave.
“Wait.”
He stopped mid–step. Elena looked at him directly. “Did I do something work–related that upset Clement?”
Her tone was calm, not defensive.
She didn’t care about attitude, but Clement had been perfectly friendly before. Today’s shift was obvious. If she had caused extra work or crossed a line, she wanted to fix it.
That was basic professionalism.
Matteo looked genuinely confused. “I don’t think so…”
He scratched his head.
Honestly, I’m confused too. He used to tell me all the time that if I needed help, I should just ask you.
That was exactly why he had come to her earlier.
And just now, he basically told me that even if everything falls apart. I still shouldn’t come to you for help.
Elena paused for a beat.
“Got it,” she said lightly. “Finish the data. We’re heading to Pinnacle this afternoon.”
She didn’t press further. Clement’s attitude didn’t actually affect her work.
“Got it.”
Matteo left the office with his laptop.
That afternoon, Elena drove them to Pinnacle Group headquarters.
She was dressed in a sharply tailored ivory suit set, clean lines, structured fit. Her long hair was nearly pinned up, and her makeup was understated but polished, giving her a confident, executive presence.
Matteo sat in the passenger seat, clutching his laptop like a lifeline. “Ms. Sterling… is Alexander really as intimidating as people say?”
Elena smiled faintly. “He’s fine, relax, he’s not going to bite.”
Matteo let out a breath and laughed nervously. “Good, because I’m seriously on edge right now.”
