When the container hit the ground, a strange sense of relief washed over Nathan. At least the packaging held up well; otherwise, Elena would go hungry.
He curled his arms over his head and shielded the crushed container beneath his body. The two robbers rained blows down on him. A dull ache throbbed in his forehead, yet he made no effort to fight back.
Eventually, a bystander called the police. The pair fled the moment officers arrived.
Nathan let out a long breath and knelt on the pavement, his trousers caked with mud. An officer helped him to his feet.
“Are you all right?”
“I’m fine.”
He pulled his arm away and bent to gather his things. The officer glanced down, surprised to see it was just a takeout box of food.
“Sir, would you like us to take you to a hospital? Do you wish to report the robbery and retrieve your belongings?”
“No, thank you. There’s no need to recover anything.”
His documents and the ring were safe. That was all that mattered.
“Please step aside. I’m leaving.”
The officer stared at the dark bruises covering his face. His right eye was swollen shut, and a cut gaped on his forehead–he looked badly injured.
“You’re hurt pretty badly. Are you sure you won’t get checked out?”
Nathan insisted on leaving, and the officers had no choice but to let him go.
He limped slowly toward the hotel, his injured leg barely supporting his weight. He caught snippets of whispered gossip from the police behind him, laced with mockery and confusion.
“Must have lost his mind.”
Maybe he had.
If he’d been sensible, he would never have driven Elena away and pushed her straight into Alexander’s arms. This was all his own doing. Countless times, watching them together, he’d

But it did not matter.

Sooner or later, he would take her back. He would make her admit he was the only one in her heart. Even if her feelings were gone, it would not stop him. As long as she stayed by his side, what difference did it make?
After walking for a long while, he finally spotted the hotel entrance.
The receptionist gasped at the sight of his battered face. “Mr. Hawthorne, are you hurt? Do you need-
Nathan did not let her finish. He swiped his room card and stepped into the elevator.
They were on the same floor. He knew exactly which room Elena had stayed in. First, he returned to his own room to shower and change into fresh clothes, not wanting his sorry appearance to disgust her.
Once cleaned up, he walked to her door and knocked.
There was no answer. He knocked again. He knew her well; even if she realized it was him, she would open up, unwilling to let the noise disturb other guests.
Sure enough, soft footsteps approached. A faint smile tugged at Nathan’s lips as the door slowly swung open.
Instead of Elena, a portly middle–aged man stood in the doorway.
“What do you-”
Before the man could finish, Nathan threw a punch hard into his face. Blood streamed from his nose. He shoved the man aside and strode into the room. It was empty. No sign of Elena, none of her belongings.
“Who are you? Why did you break into my room?” The man grabbed Nathan by his shirt.
“Where is Elena?” Nathan demanded.
The man stared blankly. “Elena? I don’t know anyone by that name.”
“Answer me. Where is she?”
Nathan narrowed his eyes, his gaze turning dark and menacing. Terrified, the man instantly let go of his clothes.
“I have no idea who you’re talking about. You’ve got the wrong room!” The man was utterly

“The woman who stayed here before you.”
She had been here only hours ago. How could she have vanished so suddenly?
