After chatting for a while, Nathan suddenly spoke up. “Ms. Sterling, you’re about five or six months along, aren’t you? How does your husband feel about you traveling abroad for work while pregnant?”
He leaned back against his chair, a faint smile playing on his lips, yet his eyes held a sharp glint. Jason and Linda instinctively glanced down at Elena’s stomach.
It was true. Carrying a child, she was clearly not in the best condition for such a tough overseas business trip. Some thought she was simply too dedicated and had convinced her husband to let her go. Others suspected trouble in her marriage, assuming her spouse cared little for her well–being.
Nathan’s words were laced with deliberate provocation. Elena did not hold back. She took a sip of lemon water and smiled gently.
“You’ve only just taken charge of the Hawthorne Group, so I imagine you have mountains of work to handle. Yet you seem far less focused on your duties than on prying into other people’s private lives.”
Her tone was soft and her smile warm, but every word carried a sharp edge. Jason and Linda froze, finally sensing bad blood between the two.
Nathan showed no anger; if anything, his smile widened. “I’m merely concerned for your health. Working so far from home… who knows what your husband might get up to without you around?”
“What exactly are you implying?” Elena frowned.
“I mean no harm.” Nathan held up his hands. “Just saying, men often struggle with loneliness. Don’t you agree?”
Jason looked awkward, caught off guard by the sudden turn.
Elena’s smile turned cold. “I believe everyone ought to have basic decency. Spreading malicious gossip about others, men or women, is never appropriate.”
“I’m just looking out for you.”
“Save your concern for yourself. You put on quite the show of loving devotion to your wife earlier. From what I hear, she recently suffered a miscarriage and is still recovering in the hospital. If you truly cared for her, why aren’t you by her bedside?”
Elena’s words cut deep. She could ignore his petty jabs, but he kept pushing her, and she would not stay silent any longer.

“There’s a limit to how shameless one can be.” She smiled coldly. “Cross that line, and you just come off as pathetic. Do you understand?”
A heavy silence fell over the private room. Jason, Linda, Lucas and Roger all held their breath, staring straight ahead and pretending they heard nothing.
Still, no anger showed on Nathan’s face. Instead, he looked at her as if convinced she was consumed by jealousy.
Elena felt utterly exasperated. She had never realized he was so warped.
“I’m full.” She had completely lost her appetite. She stood up and addressed Jason. “Mr. Howard, this man and I have a long history of bad blood. Thank you for your hospitality, but please don’t mention his name around me again. I’ll take my leave.”
With that, she walked out, unable to stand his presence a moment longer.
“Understood,” Jason replied helplessly.
The moment the door closed, Elena breathed easier. “I’m heading to the restroom. Wait for me by the entrance.” She needed to splash some water on her face. Nathan never failed to ruin her mood.
“Right away,” Lucas said.
Elena turned down the corridor toward the restrooms. As she stepped out, she ran into William.
Only a few days had passed, yet he looked like a completely different man. His face was covered in stubble, his eyes bloodshot, and he appeared utterly defeated.
“Elena.” William stared at her fiercely.
“What’s going on?” She tensed and stepped back, putting some distance between them.
William reined in his rage and frustration. Corporate headquarters had forced him to come find her, begging her to visit LA Group and resume their partnership. He would lose his job if he failed.
“I was in the wrong about what happened before.” He ground his teeth, swallowing his pride to apologize. “Please let it go. Our company invites you to come over. We can lower our previous quote if you agree to work with us again.”
He paused, then added reluctantly, “I’ll even apologize properly if that’s what you want.” He would endure anything to keep his position, as long as Elena did not push things too far.
