Chapter 414 Ambushed on the Street
“Hey Alexander, I just noticed-something”
Alexander had been smiling warmly, but a flicker of unease crossed his face at her sudden words.
“Oh?”
“Have you got fine lines around your eyes? And those dark circles are pretty bad.” Elena poked at the screen, tapping the area beneath his eyes playfully. “You’re really showing signs of aging now.”
“Am I?” He rarely used skincare products. He picked up a mirror and studied his face earnestly.
Elena burst out laughing. “I’m just teasing you. How can you take i,so seriously?”
Alexander let out a low chuckle. “You’re getting far too mischievous.”
They did not often share such lighthearted banter. Elena’s laughter faded slowly, and longing welled up inside her. “I hate business trips. I wish you could turn into a little charm, so I could hang you on my bag and take you everywhere.”
“Shall I fly over tomorrow?” Alexander asked, half-joking, half-serious.
The idea tempted her greatly. She always felt safe with him by her side. Still, she shook her head. “No. need. I’ll be home in a week. Stay put for me. And please, smooth things over with your mom for me, okay?” Her voice softened into a sweet plea.
Alexander knew Evelyn was displeased about her trip/He tilted his chin playfully. “That depends on how sincere you are.”
Elena caught his hint, her cheeks flushing faintly. She leaned close to the screen and blew a loud kiss.
“There’s my token of affection. We’ll talk about the rest when I get back!”
“That’s rather half-hearted, Elena.”
“Don’t push your luck, Alexander.”

Alexander laughed aloud. “Get some rest now. Remember to eat on time. Don’t let my wife and our little one go hungry.”
“I will.”
He ended the call first. Elena stared at the black screen, a silly smile on her lips. She loved being with him. He protected her, joined in her silly moments, and let her lean on him. With him, she could always be truly herself.
After unpacking, Nathan lay down to rest. Worried that Elena still hadn’t eaten properly, he picked up his phone and dialed the front desk. “Could you recommend a good restaurant nearby?”

Chapter 414 Ambushed on the Street
“What kind of dishes are you looking for?” the receptionist asked.
“Mac and cheese, potato soup or baked rolls, that’d be perfect.” He listed the foods he knew Elena liked
“There’s an eatery close by famous for mac and cheese. Most guests here love it. But it’s quite late now the road isn’t easy to drive along.
“That’s fine. Just give me the address.”
The receptionist told him the location. Nathan checked it on his phone; it was only 1.2 miles away.
He changed his clothes and left the hotel on foot. The weather in Morven was unpredictable. A light drizzle started halfway along the road, soon turning into a heavy downpour.
His clothes soaked through, and an old injury in his right knee began to throb. He pounded the joint gently, pushing through the pain, and stopped at a convenience store to buy an umbrella.
He handed over a large banknote. When the clerk could not make change, Nathan did not linger and simply took the umbrella and left.
He arrived at Mac’s Warm Bowl. It was late, and the place was nearly empty.
“One order of mac and cheese, please. As quick as you can.”
“Sure thing.” The owner noticed his drenched appearance and hurried to prepare the food.
Ten minutes later, Nathan held the takeout container and headed back to the hotel. The neighborhood was unsafe after dark, and the streets were deserted. He quickened his pace.
As he turned a corner, two tall foreign men blocked/his path. Their gazes were hostile. Without a word, they held out their hands.
Nathan cursed inwardly. He glanced behind him and saw a few passersby standing in the distance, watching the scene unfold yet making no move to help. They only looked on.
Knowing he stood no chance against them, Nathan wisely pulled out his wallet. He took out his importan documents, then handed over all his cash and the watch on his wrist.
