Chapter 224 What He Sees
“It’s been… good,” Elena said after a brief pause.
And she meant it.

Looking back, ever since she and Alexander got together, he had done everything a husband was supposed to do. They had their disagreements, sure, but nothing ever lingered. Every time something came up, they talked it through, and it passed.
Gideon studied her expression, something unsettled in his eyes. “That’s exactly what you said when you were with Nathan.”
Elena didn’t respond right away.
Gideon leaned forward slightly, his tone more serious now. “Elena, I’m saying this because I care about you. I’ve always seen you as… family. I know how much you want something that actually feels like home, people you can rely on, something steady. But you can’t build that by leaning on someone else. And Alexander… he’s not easy to read. You should really think this through.”
His mind drifted back to the first time he met her.
She had just returned to the Hart family back then. Things hadn’t gone well with Richard and Catherine, and after a bad argument, she had nowhere to go. She ended up at Julian’s house.
Gideon happened to be there that day, working on a case with Julian.
That was when he learned about her past.
Overnight, the parents she grew up with became “not really hers,” while her biological parents barely acknowledged her existence.
She had been looking for warmth anywhere she could find it.
So when Nathan reached out to her, she took his hand without hesitation.
And in Gideon’s eyes, that same pattern was repeating now.
That was why she chose Alexander.
Why she married him.
Why she was willing to carry his child.
Elena’s lashes fluttered slightly.

She knew Gideon meant well.
“Gideon,” she said, smiling faintly, “I’m not that clueless girl anymore. I know how to protect myself.”
“I can protect you too,” Gideon said before he could stop himself.
The words landed harder than he expected.
He caught the flicker of surprise in her eyes and immediately tried to recover.
“I mean,” he added quickly, his voice tightening, “even if you weren’t with Alexander, Julian and I wouldn’t just leave you on your own. I just think the Kingsleys are… more complicated than the Hawthornes. And with your personality, I don’t know if that’s the kind of place you should stay long–term.”
Elena let out a quiet breath.
I thought he meant something else.
“The Kingsleys treat me well,” she said gently. “I’m doing fine, really. You don’t have to worry about me.”
She shifted the conversation naturally. “Didn’t Julian mention you were planning to open a research lab here? Pinnacle Group has a strong presence in healthcare. I could talk to Alexander, see if there’s a way to connect you.”
Gideon didn’t hesitate.
“No. I don’t want you to owe him anything because of me.”
Elena couldn’t help but smile a little. “He’s my husband. That doesn’t really count as owing him.”
She softened her tone. “I’ll figure it out. You’ve always wanted to be a doctor who actually helps people, right? Don’t walk away from a real opportunity just because you’re being stubborn.”
She glanced toward the window, where the street outside was just visible.
“He’s still waiting. I should go. I’ll take you out next time.”
Gideon didn’t stop her.
Outside the restaurant, Alexander stood by the car, watching through the glass.
The ease between them, the way they talked, the familiarity, all of it sat wrong with him.

His phone rang.
He answered without taking his eyes off them. “Yeah?”
Ryan’s voice came through, cautious. “Fiona called. There’s an issue with the Sterling side of a deal, and she wants to come back from Eldoria. Do you want me to assign someone else to take over her projects?”
Ryan knew exactly why Fiona had been sent away.
Under normal circumstances, Alexander wouldn’t let her come back this easily.
Not now.
Not when Elena was pregnant.
“Let her come back,” Alexander said.
Ryan paused, caught off guard. “Sorry?”
“Book her a flight,” Alexander repeated.
Ryan hesitated. “Should I give Ms. Sterling a heads–up first?”
At that moment, Alexander’s gaze shifted back inside. Gideon had just reached out and lightly pinched Elena’s cheek.
Elena startled and leaned away immediately, avoiding his hand.
Gideon laughed awkwardly and pulled back. “Right, forgot your husband’s outside. If he saw that, he’d probably get the wrong idea.”
Elena glanced toward the window.
Alexander was on the phone. He didn’t seem to have noticed.
Still… If he had seen that, this wouldn’t end quietly.
“I should go,” Elena said, picking up the cake. “Thanks for the cake. I’ll see you.”
