Chapter 232 Keep Your Distance

Alexander didn’t let go of her. If anything, his arm tightened slightly around her as he spoke in a low, tired voice. “I’m fine. I just need to sleep.”
Elena hesitated for a moment before asking carefully, “Do you want me to call Dr. Hall?”
His eyes snapped open instantly, his tone turning sharp. “No.”
The sudden edge in his voice startled her enough that she didn’t bring it up again. Instead, she stayed where she was, still trapped in his arms.
Time passed slowly. It took nearly half an hour before his breathing finally evened out, but even then, his sleep was far from restful. Every time she shifted even slightly, his grip tightened unconsciously, as if he were afraid of losing something.
Not wanting to end up suffocating in his hold, Elena forced herself to stay completely still.
Somewhere along the way, she finally fell asleep.
The next morning, Alexander woke up to pain shooting through his arm. It felt sore, numb, and completely useless. Before he even opened his eyes, he tried to move it, only to realize it wouldn’t budge, like something heavy was pinning it down.
He opened his eyes abruptly.
Elena was lying right next to him, fast asleep, her head resting squarely on his arm, her breathing slow and steady.
She hadn’t fallen asleep until nearly three in the morning, and now she was deep in sleep. In her haze, she vaguely felt something brushing against her ear, then her neck, and then moving lower.
Her eyes flew open.
She bolted upright.
A dull thud echoed as her head slammed into something solid, followed immediately by Alexander’s muffled groan.
“Elena,” he said, his voice hoarse with pain, “are you trying to murder your husband this early in the morning?”
All he had been trying to do was adjust her sleep shirt.
Elena rubbed the top of her head, wincing as the pain faded and her thoughts slowly caught up. The memories from the night before came rushing back. He hadn’t been feeling well, she had come to check on him, and somehow, he had pulled her into bed and refused to let go.
That’s on you, she shot back, her tone cold from lack of sleep. “You wouldn’t let go of me. I barely slept all night.”
She didn’t linger. Sliding out of bed, she moved to leave the room.

Alexander stepped forward and blocked her path with ease.
“You came to check on me last night?”
There was a trace of caution in his eyes, along with something else, something almost like tension that he couldn’t quite hide.
Elena let out a short, incredulous laugh. “What else do you think? You think I just randomly ended up in your bed?”
He paused for a beat before asking, his voice tightening, “…What did I do last night?”
His gaze stayed fixed on her, searching for any hint, any detail he might be missing.
Elena narrowed her eyes, immediately sensing that something was off. “Wait. You don’t remember what happened last night?”
Alexander didn’t respond.
Elena’s expression shifted, the teasing gone, replaced with concern. “Alexander, what exactly is going on with your health?”
Right now, she had no interest in revisiting whatever awkwardness had happened between them the night before. None of that mattered more than his condition.
“It’s just a cold,” he said.
As soon as the words left his mouth, his shoulders relaxed ever so slightly, like he had just cleared a hurdle.
Then he smoothly changed the subject. “I need to get to Pinnacle Group. You should go back and get some more sleep.”
“A cold?” she repeated, clearly unconvinced.
Alexander raised a brow. “What else would it be? Just some aftereffects from the accident. I get migraines sometimes, that’s it.”
“…Alright.”
That explanation made sense on the surface. Migraines could affect mood, could explain the way he’d been acting.
He’s not telling me everything.
And if he didn’t want to say it, she knew she wouldn’t be able to force the truth out of him.
“I’m going back to sleep,” she said, turning toward the door.
“Elena.”
She paused.
“If I’m not feeling well in the future, I’ll stay in the guest room,” Alexander said, his tone steady. “Don’t come

She frowned slightly, something in her chest tightening. “It’s just a cold. You’re acting like it’s something
serious.”
More than anything, she didn’t like the feeling of being shut out.
“You’re pregnant,” he said simply. “Your immune system’s weaker right now. Just listen to me.”
Elena went quiet for a moment before nodding. “…Got it.”
She left the room.
Back in her own bedroom, she lay down again, intending to catch up on sleep, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t drift off.
After a while, she gave up, got out of bed, and walked over to the floor–to–ceiling window. From there, she watched as Alexander’s car pulled out of Kingsley Manor and disappeared down the driveway.
Since sleep clearly wasn’t happening, she got ready, had breakfast, and headed to Velmora Media.
