After hanging up. Ryan finally spoke. “Mrs. Kingsley may not want to be involved with the Sterling family. If you make that decision for her, could it cause conflict?”

The two of them had only just reconciled, and he was worried this might create new tension.

“The Sterling family finding out about her identity is only a matter of time,” Alexander said.

His hand moved to his injury, where a dull ache still lingered.

“We don’t know the situation with the Kingsley family yet. The Sterlings may not be what they once were, but they still have a foundation.”

He paused. “I have to prepare for the worst.”

Elena being on her own made him uneasy.

The Sterling family might be complicated, but if she had both the Sterlings and the Kingsleys behind her, no one would dare to bully her.

She noticed the familiar car approaching.

“No need. He’s already here,” Elena replied, looking out into the rain.

Alexander had already stepped out of the car, taken the umbrella from Ryan, and was walking toward her.

He stopped at the steps, gave Gideon a slight nod, and reached out his hand. “Careful, it’s slippery.”

“Okay.” Elena said.

In front of Gideon, she placed her hand in Alexander’s.

“Bye, Gideon,” she said.

“Take care,” Gideon replied.

A heaviness spread through his chest as he watched them walk away together, Alexander’s arm wrapped firmly around her waist.

He couldn’t help but let out a quiet, self–mocking laugh.

Sometimes it really feels like the universe is playing games, giving you hope just to take it away again.

But it didn’t matter.

As long as she was happy, that was enough. He watched the car disappear into the rain before turning back into the hospital.

Inside the car, Elena took out a tissue and wiped the rain from Alexander’s shoulder. “Why were you holding the umbrella like that? Your shoulder’s soaked.”

Ryan turned around from the front seat. “Mr. Kingsley insisted on getting out himself.”

Alexander ignored him and looked at Elena. “Why were you with Gideon?”
