Chapter 302 The Fatal Crash

She wished she could pretend she hadn’t seen them, but Catherine had already stepped into her path.

“Mr. Kingsley,” Catherine began, throwing a quick look at Elena before addressing Alexander. “Elena is still a Hart, after all. What are your plans for the holidays? When were you thinking of stopping by the family home?”

Elena didn’t hear any warmth in the words-only pure self-interest.

Back then, Catherine had made it clear she wouldn’t acknowledge Elena as her daughter. She probably never expected Elena to take it so seriously-and cut ties for good.

“That’s up to my wife,” Alexander replied, his hand resting lightly on Elena’s waist, his smile polite but distant. “You seem to have a lot of free time these days, Mrs. Hart, worrying about other people’s family visits.”

Catherine fell silent. She understood Alexander wanted nothing to do with them.

Almost instinctively, she glanced toward Elena, but Elena wasn’t looking back. She was already speaking to Alexander. “Mom’s expecting us for dinner. Let’s go.”

That “Mom” certainly wasn’t her.

A sharp pang of discomfort shot through Catherine. She didn’t even feel like browsing the jewelry store anymore. In her head, she cursed Elena for deliberately trying to upset her.

“Let’s just go. Seeing her ruins my mood,” Catherine snapped, taking her irritation out on Nathan. “Nathan, why don’t you learn from how others handle things? You weren’t that far behind Alexander back in the day. Look at you now… and Camille hasn’t exactly moved forward either.”

Nathan smiled faintly. “Noted.”

Camille spoke up softly, “Mom, please.”

“Fine, fine. I’m done. Let’s head home.” Catherine tugged Camille along, with Nathan following behind. After Catherine got into the car, Camille was about to slide in beside her when a hand caught her wrist.

“Sweetheart?” Camille looked up at Nathan, confused.

“I just remembered,” Nathan said calmly, “I put a deposit on a gift for your mother at the jeweler upstairs, Haven’t picked it up yet. Come with me.”

Camille nodded, though she was puzzled. When had Nathan bought her mother a gift?

Hearing this, Catherine’s tense expression softened slightly. At least Nathan knew how to stay in her good

graces.

“You two go ahead. I’ll head back first,” she said, then told the driver to leave.

Camille watched the Hart family sedan pull away slowly before turning to Nathan. “When did you get Mom a gift? I had no idea.

Nathan kept his smile. “If you knew, it wouldn’t be a surprise, would it?”

Camille thought about it-that made sense. It was nice that Nathan was finally making an effort with her family. Her mood lifted, and she looped her arm through his. “Honey, I always knew you were the best-

A deafening explosion cut her off.

Camille jumped, covering her ears. Once the roar faded, she started to complain, “What in the world-but the words died in her throat as she turned toward the road.

A black BMW had been T-boned by a semi-truck, flipped completely onto its side, and dragged several feet -leaving smears of blood on the asphalt.

That was the Hart family car.

The same black BMW she had watched Catherine get into just three minutes earlier.

“Mom!” Camille’s voice shattered into a scream.

She tore toward the wreck in panic.

Nathan remained where he was, watching her quietly. His handsome, composed face showed no emotion at

all.

Until he sensed an unusual gaze resting on him.

Then he finally moved.

He turned to the right. Alexander and Elena were still standing beside their car, not yet inside.

They had seen it all-the semi plowing into the BMW, the car flipping, the crushing impact.

At first, Elena thought it was just another tragic accident.

But then she saw Camille sprinting toward the wreck, completely falling apart-and she understood.

Nathan hadn’t moved an inch.

His expression was so cold it bordered on cruel.

Elena studied him, a faint frown forming as an outrageous suspicion crossed her mind.

Just then, the man seemed to feel her stare. He met her eyes briefly before striding quickly over to Camille, pulling the hysterical woman into his arms and murmuring soft, steady words into her ear.

“Do you want to go over there?” Alexander asked, watching Elena closely.

“No,” she said.

She offered him a calm smile. “Didn’t you say your mom was waiting for us to eat? Let’s go.”:

Even if Catherine were clinging to life by a thread, Elena couldn’t forgive her on behalf of the girl who’d gone hungry, been overlooked, and been left behind.
