She gave Camille a quick look before walking over to Alaric and setting down the tray she was carrying.

Riona never expected to see her younger sister here—the one who had moved overseas years ago. “What are you doing back?”

Monica shrugged. “Why shouldn’t I be? After all this time, you still have that same sharp tone. Really hasn’t changed.”

Riona’s expression tightened, ready to snap back.

“That’s enough.”

Alaric’s voice cut in firmly.

“You two have been at each other since you were girls. Can’t you give it a rest? Monica just flew back for the first time in years, and here you are, still picking fights.”

His words were directed at Riona.

Riona didn’t like it, but she knew better than to talk back to Alaric. She turned away from Monica and brought the focus back to Camille. “So what about her situation…”

“She’s always been fond of the Hart lifestyle,” Monica remarked casually. “When our brother tracked her down back then, she didn’t exactly jump at the chance to come home. Let her stay with the Harts and play the part of their darling if that’s what she prefers.”

Camille quickly spoke up in her own defense. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to leave… the Harts wouldn’t allow me to go…”

“I’ve got Richard’s number right here. Want me to call and ask him myself?”

Camille pressed her lips together, biting back her frustration.

Feeling her opportunity slipping away, she gathered her nerve and shot back, “Go ahead, then. Call him. The Harts invested so much in me–you think they’d just let me walk away to live some simple life out in the middle of nowhere?”

She was betting Monica wouldn’t actually make the call.

Finally, Alaric seemed to relent. He turned to Riona and said, “You handle the arrangements for the homecoming reception. She is a Sterling, after all. We can’t have her living under someone else’s roof indefinitely.”

Camille’s heart leapt.

From now on, she would be a Sterling. Even if Elena had Alexander behind her, so what? Elena would still have to treat her with respect.

“Everything’s perfectly normal.”

Elena rested a hand gently on the small curve of her lower belly.

Monica reached over, guiding Elena into a seat.

“I heard the Sterlings are taking Camille back into the family.”
