Chapter 328 The Risky Choice
Callum finally asked the question that had been hanging in the air.
Alexander’s gaze was detached, almost icy “That’s not ray responsibility.”
His tone left no room for warmth.
“The Scotts’ downfall was due to mismanagement. That’s just how business goes. I promised my professor I’d look out for Fiona-and I did. I’ve held up my end of the deal.”
He had only ever done what was agreed upon.
After all these years of supporting Fiona, he had long since fulfilled his word.
“Then why pull back now?”
Callum raised a brow, watching him closely.
Alexander didn’t hesitate. “My wife’s worried about my health. She’s pregnant, and before our child arrives, I want to be fully present-as a husband and a father.”
When he spoke of his wife and the baby on the way, the chill in his eyes thawed.
Even his expression softened, warmth seeping into his features.
It was a stark contrast to the indifference he’d shown moments before.
Callum held back a sigh.
Fiona would be heartbroken.
He didn’t bring up Fiona again. Instead, he shifted into doctor mode, asking Alexander detailed questions about his current state. Alexander handed him the prescription he’d been using. “My primary care doctor said this isn’t working for me anymore. He suggested hypnotherapy as an option.”
Callum’s frown deepened.
His tone turned gravely serious. “Hypnosis could help, yes, but it comes with real risks. It opens up the subconscious-and given your bipolar diagnosis, there’s a significant chance it could retraumatize you rather than heal you. Some patients experience severe emotional regression, even memory loss. Are you sure you’re willing to take that chance?”
These were details Sullivan hadn’t shared.
Alexander’s brow furrowed, his lips pressed into a tight line.
“Even if medication isn’t relieving the insomnia or stabilizing your moods anymore, with adequate rest, isolating during episodes, and continuing your prescriptions, you could maintain your current condition.
In other words, hypnosis was the most aggressive route-
-and the most dangerous.
Chapter 328 The Ricky Choice
If there were any other viable path, no ethical doctor would recommend it.
“Financially, you’re set for life. Your career alone guarantees that. You don’t need to roll the dice like this.
Callum said it as both a doctor and someone who understood his position
But Alexander shook his head.
“I appreciate it,” he said quietly.
“But I still want to try.”
This kind of half-life didn’t frighten him-he’d lived it for years.
But whenever he pictured Elena, and their child growing within her, he knew he couldn’t settle for coping anymore.
She was waiting for him to get better.
He had vowed to be her husband. He owed her-and their future-more than this.
*****
Elena had stopped calling Alexander.
She only allowed herself to open their WhatsApp chat late at night.
But the screen still showed the same old messages-hers from days ago, stacked one after another. He hadn’t replied once in all that time.
Her fingertip brushed over her wedding ring.
Just as she was about to type something-anything-to break the silence, her phone buzzed.
A new message from Alexander.
“You awake?”
Her heart lifted at once, all the confusion and doubt dissolving in an instant.
“Not yet. Are you okay?”
They were married, and yet lately even their texts felt strained. Unfamiliar.
