Chapter 342 The Daughter He Raised
Before Nathan could finish speaking, Richard turned on him with an icy look..
“And who exactly do you think you are?” he said coldly. “Was I talking to you?”
He had never thought highly of Nathan.
In Richard’s eyes, if not for the Hart family, Nathan would have amounted to nothing long ago.
Frished
Nathan paused for the briefest moment, but he did not let his temper show. Instead, he only curved his lips into a faint smile, and that quiet restraint somehow made Camille feel even worse for him.
“Dad. why are you taking it out on Nathan?” she said quickly. “I’m already handling it, aren’t I? Stop pushing me. Things like this can’t be rushed.”
Fortunately, Richard did not press the matter further.
“Tomorrow is the first day of the new year,” he said. “It’s been a while since you visited your mother. We’ll go see her.”
Camille had no choice but to agree.
The next day, Nathan drove them to the hospital.
Catherine was still lying in bed exactly as before. Other than the steady rhythm of the heart monitor, there was almost no sign of life in her at all, and if not for the machinery and the hired caregiver the Hart family had arranged to prevent bedsores and other complications, she might easily have been mistaken for someone already gone.
Camille sat at the bedside and said a few perfunctory things to her, little more than a brief update on her recent life and a few hollow words about hoping she would get better soon, while Richard stood nearby watching in silence with a look on his face that was impossible to read.
That silence was suffocating.
It made Camille’s back grow cold.
“Dad, why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, forcing a smile. “Are you still upset because I haven’t secured funding for the Hart family yet? I already told you this can’t be rushed. If I push too hard and anger the old man, and the Sterlings throw me out, then everything we’ve done will have been for nothing.”
Richard’s expression barely shifted.
“You sound very afraid of being thrown out by the Sterlings,” he said flatly. “I suppose that means our Hart family is no longer worthy of someone as important as Miss Sterling.”
“Dad…”
Camille’s voice was strained with helplessness.

But Richard showed no intention of letting her breathe.

“My patience is limited, he said. “The company is doing worse and worse, and your mother is still lying in this hospital bed. Treating her will cost more money before this is over. She doted on you so much when she was conscious. Surely you won’t disappoint her.”
The words were not loud, but each one carried pressure, coercion, and something very close to a threat.
Camille lowered her eyes.
“…I understand.”
Only then did Richard nod with satisfaction.
A moment later, his phone rang. After glancing at the screen, he said, “You two stay here and talk to her. Something came up at the company, so I’m leaving.”
He hurried out, and the second he was gone, the mask Camille had been holding in place fell apart.
She threw her handbag onto the sofa with force.
“This is driving me insane.”
Her voice rose with resentment.
“He thinks asking the Sterlings for money and resources is that easy? Every time he opens his mouth, it’s millions upon millions. He doesn’t treat me like a daughter at all. He treats me like a cash machine.”
She was so angry that she forgot, for a moment, all the times Richard had once treated her well.
And Catherine…
Camille used to be good to her because Catherine had been good to her, because Catherine had indulged her and loved her, but now that she had become nothing more than a patient lying unconscious in bed that dependence had begun to fade little by little with time.
She turned her head impatiently and looked at the woman on the bed, who seemed thinner and more
(* haggard every time she saw her.
“I honestly don’t know why you’re still alive,” she muttered. “You can’t eat, you can’t drink, you can’t even look at the world anymore. If it were me, I’d rather just die.”
The room went still.
Only then did Camille realize what she had just said, and she turned sharply toward Nathan.
When she saw that his expression had not changed, that he still looked calm and unreadable, the panic in her chest eased slightly.
She walked over to him, took hold of his hand, and gave it a small shake.
“Hubby, I didn’t mean it like that,” she said hurriedly. “I was just angry, and I said something without thinking. I’m not really that kind of person. You know that, don’t you?”

Finished
More than anything, she did not want Nathan to see that side of her.
Nathan looked at her with quiet gentleness.
“I understand,” he said softly. “Even if you really have changed, it’s because your father has pushed you too far. Camille, you’ve had a hard time.”
His eyes were full of sympathy, and somehow that only made her more agitated.
“I know,” she said bitterly. “I feel like I’m suffocating. He doesn’t understand me at all… Why can’t he just be like my mother and stay there as a living corpse…”
The words were out before she could stop them.
At once, she covered her mouth.
“I’m going to the restroom,” she said quickly, eager to escape the suffocating embarrassment she had created.
Nathan only nodded.
“Go ahead.”
The moment she left, the ward fell silent again.
Now only Nathan and Catherine remained.
He walked slowly to the bedside, and whatever tenderness had been on his face moments earlier was gone. In its place was something colder, darker, edged with satisfaction and ridicule.
Then he noticed it.
A tear slipping from the corner of Catherine’s tightly closed eye.
His lips curved.
