“There’s nothing you can do to help him right now,” Dr. Sullivan said, his tone grave. “The only thing you should do is leave him alone in the room.”

To put it plainly, Alexander was no longer fully in control of himself. In a state like this, and with Elena being pregnant, the most important thing was not calming him down but making sure she stayed safe and kept her distance.

Elena opened her mouth, wanting to say more, but before she could, a sudden chill ran down her spine.

Her whole body stiffened.

Alexander was already standing behind her.

At some point, he had crossed the room without making a sound, and now those familiar eyes of his, the ones she knew better than almost anything else, were dark and bloodshot in a way that made her heart seize with fear.

This was not the man she knew.

Even though she had tried to prepare herself for the possibility, the sight of him still frightened her badly.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

Elena’s voice caught for a second before she managed to answer. “Calling Dr. Sullivan.”

His gaze stayed fixed on her.

“Are you afraid of me?”

“No,” she said instinctively, though the word came out thin and unsteady. “Ari, let’s just take the medicine, alright?”

Afraid of provoking him further, she ended the call immediately, but almost the very next second, before she could say anything else, he reached out and wrapped one hand tightly around her throat.

Her neck was so slender that he could encircle it with one hand alone.

His fingers tightened.

The air in her lungs thinned at once, and Elena clawed desperately at his wrist with both hands, trying to pry him off.

Elena staggered back, clutching her throat as she coughed violently.

“Ma’am?”

“I’m fine,” she managed after a moment, still struggling for breath as she waved a hand to stop him from worrying. “Take Ari back to the clinic.”

Alexander remained unconscious the entire way there, and by the time they got him back into his room, he still had not woken up.

Only then did Elena finally go into the bathroom and look at herself properly in the mirror.

Her skin was so fair that the bruising stood out almost immediately. Because he had truly used force, a dark red ring was already forming around her neck, ugly and unmistakable.

She stared at it for a second, then walked back out and asked Declan to buy her a high–neck sweater.

The moment he saw the marks, he understood exactly why.

“Don’t tell him,” Elena said at once.

Alexander most likely would not remember clearly what he had done, and if he saw the bruises, he would make her leave immediately.

Declan was silent for a moment before saying quietly, “Mr. Kingsley was right. In your condition, going back is the best option.”

Elena knew he meant well, and she knew he was saying it for her sake, but she could not leave Alexander alone here, not now, not after seeing him like that.

Declan understood the answer in her silence and did not press her further. He simply did as she asked, bought the sweater, and brought it back for her to change into.

More than half an hour later, Alexander finally began to wake.

He looked drained, as though the headache splitting through him was enough to tear him apart from the inside, and for a long while he sat there with one hand braced against his forehead, trying to pull himself back into focus.

When his eyes finally lifted, Elena was still there beside him.

“Are you feeling better?” she asked, pretending nothing had happened as she poured him a glass of water. “Dr. Newton came by to see you. He said it wasn’t anything too serious, probably just an episode brought on by not getting enough rest lately. Next time, you can’t keep pushing yourself like this.”

She even gave him a mildly reproachful look, as though this were nothing more than an ordinary Scolding.
