Chapter 348 Transactional Relationship

It almost felt as though fate enjoyed playing cruel little games with them. Richard still remembered what Elena had been like when she first returned to the Hart family, a quiet, uncertain girl with innocence written all over her face, someone who seemed easy to control, easy to shape. Now she sat across from him with calm confidence, her posture relaxed, her gaze clear and unwavering, as though nothing in this world could truly shake her anymore.
“What exactly do you want to talk about?”
She had no interest in reminiscing. After ordering a drink, she went straight to the point, her tone efficient and detached, leaving no room for sentiment.
Richard let out a long sigh, trying to sound weary and paternal at the same time.
“You know the current situation of the Hart Group. Whether you hate me or not, whether you feel anything at all, none of that changes the fact that you are still my daughter, my flesh and blood…”
Elena had heard variations of that sentence more times than she could count.
People like Richard and Catherine always believed they had the right to hurt you, to control you, to demand everything from you, yet the moment you showed even the slightest resistance, they would accuse you of being ungrateful, of having no conscience.
She lifted her glass, took a slow sip of milk, and then set it down.
“You know talking like this doesn’t work on me. I don’t have any emotional attachment to you.”
She met his eyes, her expression calm, almost indifferent.
“Let’s talk about benefits instead.”
Her words cut straight through the thin layer of warmth he had tried to create, exposing the truth beneath.
“There’s no relationship between us beyond. So there’s no need to waste time pretending.”
comparison. The calmer she appeared, the more awkward and diminished Richard seemed in comparison. “The Hart Group has been losing projects recently,” he admitted, his voice tightening despite himself. “I had hoped Camille could secure something through the Sterling family, but I overestimated her. She has no real say there. Elena, the Hart Group is everything I’ve built in this life. I can’t just stand by and watch it collapse.”
When he spoke about the company, frustration finally broke through.
“It’s been nothing but bad luck these past three months. Out of nowhere, a bunch of companies showed up and started taking our projects. If not for them, things wouldn’t have deteriorated this far.”
He kept complaining, never noticing the faint flicker of something unreadable in Elena’s eyes.
“I can help you,” she said.

The words came lightly, but they landed like a lifeline.
Richard’s eyes lit up almost instantly.
“Really?”
“Don’t be too quick to celebrate.”
Elena placed her glass down and leaned back slightly, her tone cool and measured.
“I told you already, this is a business transaction.”
She paused just long enough for the weight of her next sentence to settle.
“I want thirty percent of your shares. In exchange, I’ll bring the Hart Group back to life.”
The hope on Richard’s face shattered almost immediately.
“Don’t go too far.”
Thirty percent.

He only held forty–five percent himself, and Camille had ten. If he handed over thirty percent, the control of the company would essentially slip from his hands.
“You don’t have to decide right away,” Elena said, her voice almost leisurely. “Take your time and think it through. You can either give the company to your biological daughter, let it survive, and keep your title as chairman, or you can sit back and watch it collapse completely. And even if you get lucky and it somehow doesn’t collapse, everything will still end up in Camille’s hands eventually.”
Her tone carried a faint hint of amusement, but her words were ruthless.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
In the past, he wouldn’t have minded leaving everything to Camille. He had genuinely treated her as his daughter. But recently, her disdain toward the Hart family had become impossible to ignore, and Catherine’s sudden death only made things feel more unsettling. They had visited her during the day, and she was still alive. By nightfall, she was gone.
If everything ended up in Camille and Nathan’s hands, then perhaps one day, he would meet the same fate.
The thought sent a chill down his spine.
After a long internal struggle, he finally spoke, his voice low and cautious.
“You’re certain you can save the Hart Group? Does the Kingsley family really trust you that much?”
This wasn’t a small investment. Reviving the Hart Group would require a massive amount of capital.
“Let me remind you,” he added, unable to fully hide his doubt, “don’t take on something you can’t handle. This isn’t a small sum of money.”

“Money?”
Elena let out a soft laugh
“That’s the one thing I’m not lacking.”
Her gaze was steady, almost effortless in is confidence.
“Transfer the shares first. Everything else will follow.”

Richard still had doubts. It was one thing for Alexander to favor Elena, but another entirely to entrust her with that level of financial control.
Even so, he had no better option left.
Between Camille and Elena, the choice had already been made.
The contract was signed quickly, almost faster than he had expected.
In less than an hour, Elena had quietly become the largest shareholder of the Hart Group.
“I want all major project proposals from the past three months on my desk within twenty–four hours,” she said, her tone shifting completely into that of a decision–maker. “Not just the ones currently under negotiation, but also the ones that were taken from you. I also want detailed information on the companies that intercepted those projects.”
She didn’t pause.
