But Cristian hadn’t done very well with Andrew’s unit, so when Andrew was transferred out, he didn’t take Cristian with him.

On top of that, he was so shy that he wasn’t close to anyone else. Even after he got left behind, he never tried to join any cliques.

Later, he ended up under Francis’s command and finally got noticed.

Honestly, the way Francis noticed him was pretty funny.

Cristian wasn’t the kind of person to fight for anything. If someone hadn’t found him tucked away in some corner, no one would have even noticed he was there. He was definitely not the type to volunteer himself for anything.

But that day, Kay just happened to talk to him.

Francis walked by and saw Cristian and Kay laughing and chatting. Instantly, Francis’s alarms went off–could it be that Kay actually likes the clean–cut, honest pretty–boy type?

But really, Kay had just asked him for directions and given him a friendly smile.

After that, Francis kept his eye on Cristian, wanting to see if there was something going on between him and Kay.

He didn’t expect that, by watching, he’d end up finding a real talent–damn, this kid’s got some real talent. Tough as nails, and never complains.

So Cristian ended up getting promoted, all the way to lieutenant.

In Francis’s opinion, Cristian’s only flaw was how much he ate. Otherwise, he was great in

every way.

By the end of that meal, Cristian had eaten another ten whole–grain breads.

Caroline didn’t hand out food to Cristian just because she didn’t care about supplies.

She genuinely thought this kid was a good guy–and his ability was impressive, too.

Plus, who knew what kind of danger they’d run into later? It was no good if someone team was too hungry to work.

After all, the helicopter they were in was military property.

What Caroline didn’t notice was that, up in the cockpit, Tyler’s mood was getting worse the whole time…

When Cristian finally finished and switched with Tyler to pilot the helicopter, Tyler came to the back.

Caroline saw Tyler walk over, looking downcast.

“Caroline, I’m hungry too.”

Tyler said to Caroline, sounding hurt.

She was a little taken aback.

At first, she wanted to say, “If you’re hungry, just eat.” Tyler had his own storage space, after all.

But she soon understood what he was getting at.

She burst out laughing, then sighed, “All right, let’s all eat something together. Raven’s probably hungry too, so we can all share the food.”

So Caroline, Tyler, and Raven all had a simple meal together in the back.

Nobody got out anything fancy–they ate pretty much the same stuff as Cristian.

Even though Caroline and Tyler had plenty of great food in their storage spaces, and by now

they basically trusted the military, they still chose to keep things low–key.

Chicken breast and whole–grain bread were good enough, and it’s not like those were impossible to find anymore.

After that meal, Tyler finally looked at ease again.

Caroline found the whole thing kind of funny.

The helicopter wasn’t very fast, so by the time night fell, they’d only made it about halfway to their destination.

They reached the second supply stop and landed the helicopter.

By now, they were deep in the interior, far from the coast, so there was little chance of running into the Sea Folk.
