Chapter 41

Chapter 41

Andrea thought to herself, Another player? Seriously?

Is today some kind of special day? Why is it so lively?

Andrea opened the bedroom door.

Dustin gestured excitedly toward the distance.

Dustin called out, Found an island, boss.

That’s a pretty big island. Is it another town?

Andrea scanned the distant island, thinking it over before she answered, I don’t think so.”

The island was massive. It was about the same size as the towns she’d seen before.

There were no cargo docks along the shore, and she didn’t spot any monsters coming and going.

She guessed it was a private island.

There was no way any player could own an island this big yet, so it had to belong to some NPC.

She had Dustin take the wheel and head straight for the island. Half an hour later, they were a few dozen yards from shore.

Andrea watched from afar for a bit. Since she didn’t see any obvious threats, she decided to go ashore and take a look.

She doublechecked her backpack and space, making sure she had everything she needed.

Andrea left Dustin on their own island and went to check out the new one by herself.

Dustin was eager to follow, but Andrea didn’t feel comfortable leaving their home island unattended.

There was a good chance she’d run into other players on the island, and Andrea wasn’t ready to let anyone else know about Dustin yet.

Plus, with Dustin staying behind, it could help her out if anything happened.

I’ve been learning for so long. Guess it’s finally time to get some real practice, Andrea thought to herself.

As soon as Andrea stepped onto the island, the air instantly felt comfortable.

It was as if something was keeping out all the blazing heat from outside.

The seawater was icy cool. Andrea grabbed some and splashed it on her face without thinking.

So refreshing!she said.

The shore was lined with a wide stretch of soft sand, and there were a dozen or so coconut trees, all heavy with fruit.

Andrea didn’t feel tempted at all. Dustin had already handed her a coconut for the road.

But she wasn’t going to turn down extras.

So she had the mechanical arm pick all the coconuts and store them in her space.

Feeling pretty satisfied, she kept moving forward.

Not far off, a giant octopus was lounging in the sun.

Andrea stared at its tentacles, her mouth practically watering, but after thinking it over, she decided to let it go.

This thing was way too big. One wrong move and she could end up getting dragged into the sea.

She figured it wasn’t worth the risk.

But while Andrea was willing to let it be, the octopus clearly had other plans for her.

The octopus cracked an eye open. Then, it locked eyes with Andrea.

Without warning, it lunged at her, tentacles flailing. Andrea didn’t hesitate for a second before turning and sprinting away.

No way this thing can stay out of the water for long, right?Andrea reassured herself as she bolted away.

Thinking that, she dashed deeper into the island.

Why does one of its tentacles look kind of short?Andrea thought.

Even as she wondered about it, Andrea didn’t slow down. She kept sprinting for her life.

But this octopus acted like it had some kind of vendetta against her. It wouldn’t give up. Before Andrea knew it, it was following her all the way up the hill.

Andrea thought, Of course, creatures in this game never play by the rules.

Who says it can’t leave the water anyway?

Even Bubba the shark can hang out on land without a problem.

Should’ve known better.

Andrea and the octopus kept running.

Andrea felt like she’d scrambled up hills and weaved through dense woods.

She honestly lost count of how long she’d been running by now.

Every arrow Andrea fired behind her was batted aside by the octopus’s powerful tentacles.

She tried anesthetics and poison. But even if one of its tentacles got poisoned, the octopus would rather tear it off and keep coming after her.

Seriously, what did I ever do to deserve this?Andrea thought.

Andrea was so shocked her eyes nearly popped out of her head.

It felt like something was trying to surface in her mind, but in the heat of the moment, she couldn’t remember what it was.

Andrea tried to keep her breathing steady. Her stamina was holding up. Her lungs weren’t about to explode yet.

Andrea thought to herself, Running like this isn’t going to work. I need to find somewhere to hide.

If I have to fight, I’ll need to be clever about it and not charge straight in.

They say octopuses have nine brains, but this one looks like it’s gone full monster mode. Who knows how many brains it’s packing now?

Andrea zigzagged through the island, dodging like a pro with unpredictable moves.

Suddenly, she spotted something.

Not far ahead was a cave. The entrance was small, but it looked sturdy enough.

She sped up and looped through the trees to confuse the octopus. Taking advantage of the cover while it was still tangled up in the woods, she quickly slipped into the cave.

When the sudden commotion outside faded as quickly as it had started, Andrea breathed a little easier.

She took a quick drink and recharged her energy.

The cave was nothing but stone, and it was so pitchblack inside that Andrea could hardly make out anything.

Andrea kept close to the wall, making sure nothing could ambush her.

When things outside quieted down, she took out her flashlight and scanned the cave.

Luckily, there weren’t any monsters lurking around. The place looked like it had been artificially excavated.

There were some neatly shaped stones scattered on the ground, and next to them stood a stone table.

Andrea thought the carvings on the table were pretty stylish, so she decided to stash the whole thing in her space.

She figured Dustin could use it, or maybe she’d stack it up to build something cool on their island.

She poked around the cave a bit more, but didn’t find anything else of interest.

Andrea got ready to head out and check if the octopus had moved on.

She turned off her flashlight and moved as quietly as possible, inching her way down the passage toward the

entrance.

At the final bend, Andrea carefully peeked around the corner to see what was out there.

The instant she did, she felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

Right at the exit, a massive, unblinking eye was fixated on the inside of the cave.

Its tentacles were still struggling to force their

Andrea reflexively raised her wrist crossbow and fired an arrow straight away.

The octopus never saw it coming. Her shot landed right in its eye.

The octopus jerked in agony, its whole body shaking like crazy. After ripping the arrow out of its eye, it completely lost it and went wild.

It slammed itself over and over against the cave wall, its massive strength and weight making the whole cave

tremble.

Tiny bits of stone quickly began to fall from the ceiling.

I can’t stick around here. This cave might collapse if that thing keeps smashing into it!Andrea thought, her heart racing.

Andrea kept her crossbow trained on the octopus, firing shot after shot without a break.

She went all out, launching poisontipped and tranquilizer arrows one after another.

With its eye injured, the octopus was seriously slowed down, giving Andrea the perfect opening to strike.

Several arrows sank deep into its body, turning the octopus into a pincushion.

But it was only a little weaker. Getting hurt made it even crazier.

Andrea could only hope the drugs would kick in before the cave came crashing down.

She retreated further into the cave, thinking to herself, Better not show myself and provoke that thing any more right now.

With a thunderous rumble, a huge boulder crashed down right next to Andrea.

Damn, the whole cave’s about to cave in!Andrea thought.
