Chapter 2
I forced my trembling hands to stay still and plastered on another smile.
“A debt’s a debt. Of course I’ll pay it back.”
Isabella’s grin widened.
“Good girl. I hope you keep that attitude.”
She leaned in closer, voice dropping to a whisper.
“My husband’s a little naive, you know? Got played by a gold digger. I’m just helping him get even. Hope you don’t mind.”
Before I could react, her grip on my wrist tightened-hard. Then she shoved.
I gasped as I stumbled backward, my knee slamming into the marble steps. Pain shot through my leg, and I felt the warm trickle of blood.
I looked up, gritting my teeth against the throbbing ache.
Isabella stood at the top of the stairs, hand dramatically pressed to her lips, eyes wide with fake shock.
“Oh my God, Ava! Are you okay? It’s just a hundred grand-surely you’re not so broke you can’t even stand up straight? You look awful. Want us to give you a ride home?”
Her smile turned sharp, dripping with satisfaction.
“Jackson just bought me this new sports car. I think a hundred K should cover the gas to drop you off.”
That car. Jackson had given it to her as an anniversary gift.
The whole body was encrusted with pink diamonds-tacky as hell, but so Isabella.
She loved parading it around town, soaking up the media frenzy and all the jealous stares.
I dragged my gaze up to Jackson. He stood there, hands in his pockets, staring down at me with those cold, unreadable eyes.
I felt like a kicked-around stray, scrambling to my feet, forcing another smile.
“No thanks. I’ll get home on my own.”
Isabella giggled, practically bouncing on her heels.
“Alright then! See ya!”
She turned to Jackson, looping her arm through his.
“Babe, I just figured out what to spend it on.”
“Lulu’s dog bowl broke. I wanna get her one of those fancy smart ones.”
Jackson’s gaze lingered on me for a beat too long, something unreadable flickering in his eyes.
Then, voice flat:

I didn’t even have enough money left to pay for a ride home.
