Chapter 11
When the police showed up, Jackson didn’t flinch.
He ignored the officers behind him, guns drawn and aimed at his back, and crouched down to tuck the blanket tighter around my legs.
“I’m sorry, Ava. First time I’ve ever killed anyone. Thought I hid it better. Thought I’d have more time with you before they found out.”
He smiled at me-soft, sad.
“Guess I didn’t hide it well enough. I’m sorry, Ava. I scared you again, didn’t I?”
He started to stand. I grabbed his hand, gripping it so tight my knuckles went white.
“Why? Why would you do this?!”
Jackson’s composure finally cracked. His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I hate her! I hate myself!”
His voice broke.
“Ava, whatever pain you went through back then-I feel it now. Every bit of it. The rage. The guilt. I couldn’t… I couldn’t live with it.”
“So I took her life. And soon, I’ll take mine. How else could I face you? How else could I make it right?”
“You were the person I loved most in this world. I used to hold you like you were made of glass, terrified I’d break you. And then I… I destroyed you…”
He took a shaky breath, his cold, trembling hand cupping my face. He forced himself to smile.
“My Ava. The purest, most beautiful person in the world. They threw dirt on you. So I washed it off with blood.”
Jackson had planned Isabella’s murder meticulously.
He documented everything.
In the footage, he pinned Isabella to the floor, a knife in his hand. Over and over, he drove it down-no expression on his face. Just cold, mechanical precision.
Isabella’s screams echoed through the video:
“I loved you! I was trying to help you! She was dying anyway-why not make use of her? We’re happy now, aren’t we?!”
“Jackson, I’m your wife! I’m the one who’s supposed to spend the rest of your life with you! You used to treat me so well-you gave me everything…”
She kept trying to remind him of their past, desperate to pull him back from the edge.

But the knife didn’t stop.
Not until her voice faded. Not until she went still.
Jackson calmly wrapped her body in plastic sheeting and dragged it into the basement drainage system. Then he cleaned the
house-methodically,
efficiently.
